A senior U.S. Space Force officer has stressed that China's new hypersonic weapon system is indeed orbital in nature and could be able to stay in space for an extended period of time. This is the latest piece of official information about this novel system that reportedly uses some kind of hypersonic glider, which may be capable of launching its own projectiles to actually execute a strike.

As the article goes on to explain, it can't be overstated just how much of a game changer this is. All of the US early warning system and deterrence strategy are based on the ability to detect incoming ICBMs from specific directions and with time to respond.

Our land based ICBM fields can't act as a missile sponge if an adversary can just nuke the few command and control nodes across the country prior to their granting permission to fire the missiles.

Nuke armed bombers only fly from a few fields, and there are only ever one or two ballistic missile subs actively cruising at any one time. A fast enough strike on the handful of relevant targets could leave the entire counterattack responsibility on only one or two submarine commanders.

What exactly has Biden done with the military that would signal to adversaries that we are in a weakened state? We’re still spending all the money and seem to be doing largely all the same things with our troops. The only military thing I can think of that wasn’t great was our withdrawal from Afghanistan, and while there were some very legitimate criticisms to be had, it wasn’t that we were too weak or timid.

Hell, if anything the Biden Administration’s commitment to the status quo in our use of the military would be one of my largest concerns thus far.
