    2018 payroll

    is rather restricted.

7 players signed garnering 73 mil, with 2 others with options, Dickey, 8 mil, .5 mil buy out, and Flowers at 4 mil with .3 mil buy out.

    In mils

    Kemp 21.5
    Freddie 21.0
    Markakis 10.5
    Julkio 8.0
    J.Johnso 4.5
    Ender 4.0
    Suzuki 3.5

Matt Adams is Arby eligible, '17 at 2.8, '18 ???

Taking on Flowers at 4 mil and buy out of Dickey puts the Braves at 77.5 mil guaranteed for 9 players.

How much will Arby eligible guys get?? What salary increase will all the arby ineligible guys get?

Not much room for signing big time FA or trading for big contracts. Appears the Braves roster is pretty much set for '18.

Which is why Coppy said the big acquisition will be a BP arm or 2.

I have all the 2018 payroll numbers at work, but I think it's pretty clear to anyone who doesn't have their head buried in the sand that the Braves have very little to spend. They are also very limited in ways to shed payroll.

I estimated the 2018 payroll at ~$100M if no changes are made in this post:

MLBTR just posted their projected arbitration salaries for 2018:

    https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/...-for-2018.html

Easy non-tender calls based on that list are Krol and Jace. Santana and MAdams are non-tender candidates as well, but I will go ahead and project them to the 2018 roster in place of SRod. That leaves the Braves almost exactly at $102M in 2018:

    # Pos Player Salary
    1 C Flowers $4.00
    2 1B Freeman $21.00
    3 2B Albies $0.55
    4 3B Camargo $0.55
    5 SS Swanson $0.55
    6 LF Kemp $18.25
    7 CF Inciarte $4.70
    8 RF Markakis $11.00

    9 SP1 Teheran $8.00
    10 SP2 Folty $2.70
    11 SP3 Dickey $8.00
    12 SP4 Newk $0.55
    13 SP5 Fried $0.55

    14 BN1 M Adams $4.60
    15 BN2 Rio $0.55
    16 BN3 Santana $1.10
    17 BN4 L Adams $0.55
    18 BN5 Suzuki $2.50

    19 BP1 JJ $5.00
    20 BP2 Viz $3.70
    21 BP3 Freeman $1.20
    22 BP4 Ramirez $0.55
    23 BP5 Minter $0.55
    24 BP6 Winkler $0.80
    25 BP7 Wisler $0.55

    Total $102.05

Assuming payroll decreases this year to the $110M range, they have $8M to play with. They can probably get their 2 BP arms with that chunk of money.

Trading or non-tendering MAdams is a pretty easy call to save $4M (we saw with SRod the Braves are in no position to pay for premium bench bats). Dropping Dickey can save another $7M. Sticking Acuna in for Markakis frees up another $10.5M, and sticking him in for Kemp might save the Braves $5M.

Some combination of trading MAdams, letting Dickey go, and sticking Acuna in the OF can likely save them $15M-$20M. That chunk of cash could allow them to sign someone like Cobb or trade for someone like Odorizzi to stabilize the rotation.

That cash could also be used to add a player at 3B, but I would much rather see the Braves give with Camargo 400+ PAs to see if he can be a glove-first 2-3 win guy at 3B for a few years.

I would also like to see them give Flowers a raise in exchange for 1-2 more option years. He is easily worth $8M next year. Something like $8M next year with another $8M option with a $500k option.

I really doubt the Braves get any starting pitchers when they have Teheran, Foltynewicz, Newcomb, Sims, Gohara and Fried. That’s with out count Dickey coming back. They need to create roster space for the ones they have. On less they pack a few of those players.

I think out of Fried, Gohara, and Sims that one will end up in the bullpen and one will start in AAA.

Suzuki will earn 3.5 mil in '18. Figures for Folty, Matt Adams, Viz, are the MLBTR numbers. My guess would be that they are on the low side by a total of 1.5 mil. Braves are hoping that Dickey retires which would save them .5 mil and cut the salary by 8 mil. Kemp definitely needs a new home with the Braves paying him 18 mil in '18(21.5 minus 3.5 being paid by Dodgers).

I like the idea of saving 15-20 mil with a salary reduction to 110 mil range. Could be used to replace Folty with a certified 1-2 rotation guy when Folty fails yet again.

I would rather hope Dickey stays since it's easier to replace him in the rotation with the kids if need be. Plus, he's fairly reliable. Everyone dislikes knucklers, but they get the average job done sometimes.
