1903: The Pirates defeat the Boston Pilgrims 7-3 in the first World Series game ever played.
1932: Joe DiMaggio makes his professional debut for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League.
1932: In Game 3 of the World Series at Wrigley Field, Babe Ruth in the fifth inning points to the center field, giving birth to the legend of his "called shot". He hit the next pitch out for a home run in the Yankees 7-5 win over the Cubs. While Ruth referred often to his called shot, Cubs pitcher Charlie Root denied to his dying day that the Babe made such a gesture.
1933: Babe Ruth makes his final appearance as a pitcher, allowing 12 hits and five earned runs in the Yankees 6-5 win over the Red Sox.
1944: The Browns clinch the AL pennant with a 5-2 win over the Yankees.
1945: Hall of Famer Rod Carew is born in Gatun, Panama Canal Zone.
1951: CBS broadcasts the first game of the best of three playoff for the NL pennant, won by the Giants 3-1. It marked the first ML game broadcasted Coast to coast.
1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run, breaking Babe Ruth's single season record.
1961: The Angels lose to the Indians 6-1 in the final game played at the Los Angeles version of Wrigley Field.
1967: The Tigers clinch the AL pennant with a 5-3 win over the Twins.
1970: The Phillies defeat the Expos 2-1 in the final game at Connie Mack Stadium.
1973: The Mets defeat the Cubs 6-4 to win the NL East.
1975: The Expos fire manager Gene Mauch and replace him with Karl Kuehl.
1978: Gaylord Perry records his 3,000th strikeout.
1980: The Red Sox fire manager Don Zimmer.
1984: Peter Uberroth takes over as the sixth commissioner of baseball.
1984: Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston dies at age 72.
1995: The Rockies and Yankees become the first Wild Card teams under baseball's new postseason format.
2004: Ichiro Suzuki breaks the single season record of 257 hits set by George Sisler in 1920.
2006: Needing one win to clinch the AL Central, the Tigers are swept in a doubleheader by the last place Royals and have to settle for the Wild Card. The Twins wind up taking the division title.
2007: In a one game playoff for the NL Wild Card, the Rockies win 9-8 in 13 innings on a close play at the plate when Matt Holliday slides home on a sac fly by Jamey Carroll.
2009: The Rockies clinch a postseason berth with a 9-2 win over the Brewers.
