    Today In Baseball History: October

    October 1st:

    1903: The Pirates defeat the Boston Pilgrims 7-3 in the first World Series game ever played.

    1932: Joe DiMaggio makes his professional debut for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League.

    1932: In Game 3 of the World Series at Wrigley Field, Babe Ruth in the fifth inning points to the center field, giving birth to the legend of his "called shot". He hit the next pitch out for a home run in the Yankees 7-5 win over the Cubs. While Ruth referred often to his called shot, Cubs pitcher Charlie Root denied to his dying day that the Babe made such a gesture.

    1933: Babe Ruth makes his final appearance as a pitcher, allowing 12 hits and five earned runs in the Yankees 6-5 win over the Red Sox.

    1944: The Browns clinch the AL pennant with a 5-2 win over the Yankees.

    1945: Hall of Famer Rod Carew is born in Gatun, Panama Canal Zone.

    1951: CBS broadcasts the first game of the best of three playoff for the NL pennant, won by the Giants 3-1. It marked the first ML game broadcasted Coast to coast.

    1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run, breaking Babe Ruth's single season record.


    1961: The Angels lose to the Indians 6-1 in the final game played at the Los Angeles version of Wrigley Field.

    1967: The Tigers clinch the AL pennant with a 5-3 win over the Twins.

    1970: The Phillies defeat the Expos 2-1 in the final game at Connie Mack Stadium.

    1973: The Mets defeat the Cubs 6-4 to win the NL East.

    1975: The Expos fire manager Gene Mauch and replace him with Karl Kuehl.

    1978: Gaylord Perry records his 3,000th strikeout.

    1980: The Red Sox fire manager Don Zimmer.

    1984: Peter Uberroth takes over as the sixth commissioner of baseball.

    1984: Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston dies at age 72.

    1995: The Rockies and Yankees become the first Wild Card teams under baseball's new postseason format.

    2004: Ichiro Suzuki breaks the single season record of 257 hits set by George Sisler in 1920.


    2006: Needing one win to clinch the AL Central, the Tigers are swept in a doubleheader by the last place Royals and have to settle for the Wild Card. The Twins wind up taking the division title.

    2007: In a one game playoff for the NL Wild Card, the Rockies win 9-8 in 13 innings on a close play at the plate when Matt Holliday slides home on a sac fly by Jamey Carroll.

    2009: The Rockies clinch a postseason berth with a 9-2 win over the Brewers.

    1908: Addie Joss of the Cleveland Naps pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the White Sox.

    1920: In the only triple header played in the 20th century, the Reds take the first two games 13-4 and 7-3 with the Pirates taking the third 6-0.

    1932: The Yankees defeat the Cubs 13-6 to finish a World Series sweep. It was also the Yankees 12th straight win in World Series play.

    1936: In the most lopsided game in World Series history, the Yankees defeat the Giants 18-4 in Game 2.

    1947: In Game 3, Yogi Berra hits the first pinch home run in World Series history. However, the Yankees still lose 9-8 to the Dodgers.

    1954: The Giants defeat the Indians 7-4 to finish a World Series sweep.

    1963: In Game 1, Sandy Koufax sets a World Series record with 15 strikeouts in the Dodgers 5-2 win over the Yankees.

    1965: The Dodgers defeat the Braves 2-1 to clinch the NL pennant.

    1968: Bob Gibson strikes out 17 batters to set a World Series record in the Cardinals 4-0 win in Game 1 over the Tigers.

    1969: In their final game in Seattle, the Pilots lose to the A's 3-1. The teams moves to Milwaukee the next season and becomes the Brewers.

    1974: Hank Aaron, in his last at bat with the team, hits the last of his 736 home runs with the Braves.

    1978: Bucky Dent hits a three run homer to lift the Yankees to a 5-4 win over the Red Sox in a one game playoff for the AL East.


    1985: The Tigers Darrell Evans becomes the first player in ML history to hit 40 home runs in a season in both leagues. He did so for the Braves in 1973.

    1985: The Pirates are sold to a group of investors called Pittsburgh Associates, who were committed to keeping the team the city.

    1991: The Blue Jays clinch the AL East with a walk-off 6-5 win over the Angels.

    1995: The Mariners defeat the Angels 9-1 in a one game playoff for the AL West title.

    2001: Sammy Sosa becomes the first player to hit 60 home runs in three different seasons.

    2004: Steve Finley hits a walk-off grand slam to give the Dodgers a 7-3 win over the Giants and the NL West title.

    1909: Ty Cobb becomes the first player in ML history to win the triple crown.

    1951: "The Shot Heard Around The World": Bobby Thompson hits a three run home run in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Giants a 5-4 win in the third game of a playoff against the Dodgers, sending them to the World Series.


    1954: Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley is born in Oakland, California.

    1962: In the last of a best of three playoff, the Giants defeat the Dodgers 6-4 to win the NL pennant.

    1966: The Tigers name Mayo Smith manager, replacing Chuck Dressen, who died in August.

    1974: Frank Robinson becomes the first black manager in ML history, reaching an agreement to be player/manager for the Indians.

    1976: Hank Aaron, with the Brewers, singles in his final at bat.

    1982: The Brewers defeat the Orioles 10-2 to win the AL East. Even with the loss, the fans in Baltimore pay tribute to retiring manager Earl Weaver.

    1987: Benito Sanitago's rookie record 34 game hitting streak, also a record for catchers, comes to an end.

    1993: On the final day of the regular season, the Braves defeat the Rockies, followed by the Giants losing to the Dodgers 12-1. The Braves and their 104 wins finish one game ahead of the Giants to claim their third straight NL West title.

    1999: The Astros defeat the Dodgers 9-4 in the final regular season game at the Astrodome. The win clinches the NL Central title for Houston.

    2000: In the third inning of the NLDS Game 1, the Cardinals Rick Ankiel sets a modern ML record by throwing five wild pitches. Even with his wildness, the Cardinals win the game.

    2004: The Expos lose to the Mets 8-1 in their last game before moving to Washington and becoming the Nationals.

    2005: The Tigers Alan Trammel and the Dodgers Jim Tracy are fired as their team's managers.

    2006: The Marlins name Braves third base coach Fredi Gonzalez manager. It's the team's fourth manager since Jeffrey Loria bought the Marlins for years prior.

    2009: The Dodgers clinch the NL West with a 5-0 win over the Rockies, who claim the Wild Card berth.

    2010: The Giants clinch the NL West with a 3-0 win over the Padres. The loss by the Padres also wins the NL Wild Card for the Braves, who beat the Phillies 8-7.

    2010: With the Yankees loss to the Red Sox and a win over the Royals, the Rays clinch the AL East. The Yankees have to settle for the Wild Card.

    2012: The A's defeat the Rangers 12-5 to win the AL West and send Texas to the Wild Card Game.

    2012: The Tigers Miguel Cabrera becomes the first player since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967 to win the triple crown.

    1916: Two future Hall of Fame pitchers make their final appearances of their careers when Christy Mathewson leads the Reds to a 10-8 win over Mordecai Brown and the Cubs. Both pitchers went the distance.

    1944: Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa is born in Tampa, Florida.

    1948: The Indians beat the Red Sox 8-3 in a one game playoff for the AL pennant.

    1955: The Dodgers defeat the Yankees 2-0 to win their first World Series championship.

    1959: Fred Haney resigns as Braves manager and is replaced by Chuck Dressen.

    1964: The Giants fire manager Alvin Dark and replace him with Herman Franks.

    1992: At 22 years, 11 months, and 19 days old, The Rangers Juan Gonzalez becomes the youngest home run champ in ML history, hitting 43 for the season.

    1999: The Mets defeat the Reds 5-0 in a one game playoff for the NL Wild Card.

    2001: Barry Bonds hits his 70th home run of the season, tying Mark McGwire's single season record.

    2001: With a third inning home run, Rickey Henderson scores his 2,246th run, breaking Ty Cobb's all time record.

    2003: In Game 4 of the NLDS, Marlins outfielder Jeff Connie throws home to catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who hangs on to the ball after a collision with JT Snow, ending the game with Florida winning 7-6 and taking the series win.


    2005: The Tigers name Jim Leyland manager.

    2008: The Dodgers beat the Cubs 3-1 to finish a NLDS sweep.

    2010: The Pirates fire manager John Russell.

    2010: The Mets fire manager Jerry Manuel and GM Omar Minaya.

    2010: The Diamondbacks make interim Kirk Gibson their permanent manager.

    2014: In the longest game in postseason history, it takes the Giants six hours and 23 minutes to defeat the Nationals 2-1 in Game 2 of the NLDS. Brandon Belt's home run in the top of the 18th inning gives the Giants a 2-1 win.

    1963: Mickey Mantle hits his 15th World Series home run, tying Babe Ruth’s record. However, the Dodgers still finish a sweep of the series.

    1923: Braves shortstop Ernie Padgett turns the first triple play in NL history. He catches a liner from the Phillies Walter Holke, doubles James Tierney, then tags Cliff Lee.

    1941: The Yankees defeat the Dodgers 3-1 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

    1945: Trying to promote his Billy Goat Tavern, William Sianis buys two tickets to Game 4 of the World Series at Wrigley Field. One for himself and one for his goat. Ushers at the Stadium ask him to leave. Sianis places a “curse” on the Cubs, not allowing the team, who had not won a World Series since 1908, to ever win one again. It would not be until 2016 before the Cubs got to and win the World Series.

    1959: The largest crowd in baseball history, 92,706 fans, watch White Sox pitcher Bob Shaw outduel Sandy Koufax in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers in the fifth game of the World Series.

    1966: Becoming the youngest pitcher to throw a shutout in the World Series, 20 year old Jim Palmer leads the Orioles to a 6-0 win over the Dodgers. It turned out to be the final ML appearance for Sandy Koufax, who shocks the baseball world the next month when he announces his retirement.

    1980: In a one game playoff for the NL West, The Astros defeat the Dodgers 7-1.

    1985: With the Yankees 8-0 victory over the Blue Jays, Phil Niekro records his 300th win.

    2000: Red Sox CEO John Harrington puts the team up for sale.

    2001: The Mets Lenny Harris records his 151st career pinch hit, breaking Manny Mota’s ML record.

    2003: After falling behind 0-2 in the Series, The Red Sox beat the A’s 5-4 in the deciding Game 5 of the ALDS.

    2006: The A’s defeat the Twins 8-3 to finish an ALDS sweep.

    2007: The Diamondbacks defeat the Cubs 5-1 to finish a NLDS sweep.

    2009: A walk-off RBI single in the 12th inning gives the Twins a 6-5 win over the Tigers in a one game playoff for the AL Central.

    2010: In Game 1 of the NLDS, The Phillies Roy Halladay pitches the second no-hitter in postseason history in a 4-0 win over the Reds. He joins Yankees pitcher Don Larsen, who pitched a perfect game in Game 5 of the World Series against the Dodgers.

    2011: The White Sox name Robin Ventura manager.

    2012: The Indians name Terry Francona manager.

    1908: in a make up game made necessary due to the infamous “Merkle’s boner” play, the Cubs defeat the Giants 4-2 to win the NL pennant.

    1922: The Giants defeat the Yankees 5-3 in Game 5 to win their second straight World Series title.

    1927: The Yankees win Game 4 when Earl Combs scores on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth, finishing a World Series sweep over the Pirates.

    1939: The Yankees defeat the Reds 7-4 in ten innings, finishing a World Series sweep and becoming the first to win four straight Fall Classics.

    1940: The Reds defeat the Tigers 2-1 in Game 7 to win the World Series. Bill McKechnie becomes the first manager to win World Series titles with two different teams. He managed the 1925 Pirates to their championship.

    1956: In Game 5, Don Larsen pitches the only perfect game in postseason history in the Yankees 2-0 win over the Dodgers.


    1957: Team president Walter O’Malley makes the announcement official that the Dodgers will move to Los Angeles for the 1958 season.

    1959: The Dodgers defeat the White Sox 9-3 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

    1973: During the Mets 9-2 win in Game 3 of the NLCS over the Reds, New York shortstop Bud Harrellson takes exception to Pete Rose’s hard slide into second base, starting a brawl.

    1977: The Dodgers defeat the Phillies 4-1 in Game 4 to win the NLCS.

    1983: The Phillies defeat the Dodgers 7-2 to win the NLCS in four games.

    1995: Edgar Martinez hits a two run double off Jack McDowell in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Mariners a 6-5 win in The deciding Game 5 of the ALDS over the Yankees. The Mariners rallied to win the five game series after losing the first two in New York.


    2000: The Mets defeat the Giants 4-0 In Game 4 to win the NLDS.

    2006: The Cardinals defeat the Padres 6-2 in Game 4 to win the NLDS.

    2007: The Indians defeat the Yankees 6-4 to win the ALDS in four games. It turned out to be the final game as Yankees manager for Joe Torre.

    2011: The Cardinals defeat the Phillies 1-0 in the deciding fifth game of the NLDS.

    1915: Woodrow Wilson becomes the first US President to watch a World Series game. He’s at Philadelphia’s Baker Bowl to see the Red Sox defeat the Phillies 2-1 in Game 2 to even the Series.

    1919: The White Sox, with rumors of a fix going around, lose Game 8 to the Reds 10-5 and lost the Series. Before the next season, eight White Sox players will be accused to throwing the World Series in what becomes known as “The Black Sox Scandal”.

    1928: The Yankees beat the Cardinals 7-3 to sweep the World Series for the second straight year.

    1934: The Cardinals defeat the Tigers 11-0 In Game 7 to win the World Series.

    1938: The Yankees defeat the Cubs 8-3 to finish a World Series sweep.

    1949: During the ninth inning of the Yankees 10-8 win over the Dodgers in Game 5, the lights are turned on at Ebbets Field, making it the first time a World Series game was played under artificial lighting.

    1958: The Yankees defeat the Braves 6-2 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

    1961: The Yankees defeat the Reds 13-5 to win the World Series in five games.

    1969: Sparky Anderson accepts an offer to become the Reds new manager.

    1989: The Giants defeat the Cubs 3-2 In Game 5 to win the NLCS.

    1996: Trailing 4-3 to the Orioles in the bottom of the eighth, Derek Jeter hits a deep fly ball to right. It appears Tony Tarasco will catch the ball at the wall, but 12 year old fan Jeffrey Maier reaches over the wall and catches the ball. Replays clearly show the young fan interfering, but umpire Rich Garcia rules home run, despite the Orioles argument. The Yankees win Game 1 of the ALCS, which many believe the series may have forever changed on that moment.


    2005: Chris Burke hits a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 18th inning, giving the Astros a 5-4 win over the Braves and taking the NLDS in four games.

    2010: The Yankees defeat the Twins 6-2 to finish an ALDS sweep.

    2011: In Game 2 of the ALCS, The Rangers Nelson Cruz becomes the first player in postseason history to hit a walk-off grand slam, giving the Rangers a 7-3 win in 11 innings.

    1967: The Cardinals defeat the Red Sox 7-2 In Game 7 to win the World Series.

    1972: The A’s defeat the Tigers 2-1 in Game 5 to win the ALCS.

    1997: The Marlins defeat the Braves 7-4 In Game 6 to win the NLCS.

    2002: The Angels defeat the Twins 13-5 In Game 5 to win their first ALCS.

    2003: In Game 6 of the NLCS, The Cubs leading 3-0, five outs away from their first World Series appearance since 1945, a pop up heading towards the stands on the left field side is touched by a fan, not allowing Moises Alou a chance to catch it. The Cubs collapse afterward, allowing eight runs in the inning. The Marlins win 8-3, forcing a deciding Game 7.

    2006: Magglio Ordonez hits a walk-off home run, giving the Tigers a 6-3 win over the A’s and finishing an ALCS sweep.


    2010: The Braves officially announce Fredi Gonzalez will succeed Bobby Cox as the team’s manager.

    2015: Jose Bautista’s three run homer in the seventh lifts the Blue Jays to a 6-3 win over the Rangers in the deciding Game 5 of the ALDS.
