    They aren’t.

A player only opts out if he is projected to have surplus value moving forward. They only opt in if they are projected to have negative surplus value.

A regular 7 year contract gives the team some chance of having a player with surplus value. Opt outs remove the chance for the team to have an asset with positive surplus value. The team is guaranteed to have control over a player with negative value, or no control over that player at all.

It is a negative for the team. The best they can do is mitigate that risk by front loading the deal as we are seeing teams do this offseason.

Agreed. Opt outs are player options. The party giving the option (the team in this case) is always worse off assuming all other terms remain the same. The last part though needs to be carefully considered. I strongly suspect teams get something in return.

not sure what philly is doing. arrieta doesn't make them anything near a contender. santana was an odd signing as well.

Yeah - you may very well be right. It seems to me that players sign long free agent deals all the time where contract provide an expected negative surplus value to the team (Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, etc, come to mind).

I don't have any data to back that up - so just a gut feeling that. If that is not the case I'm happy to acknowledge that

Keep in mind I'm not saying opt outs don't have a chance to work out for teams. That's exactly what teams are hoping for with these front loaded contracts.

Time will tell if it helps mitigate the risk for teams. With the info available right now, I think front loading opt out contracts is a solid tactic for teams.

I’m not sure we are at efficient market practices in baseball.

I think I believe less in final veteran contracts having surplus value at their end then I do in someone being willing to overpay for the last squeeze of a lemon or a player opting out unwisely.

For all practical purposes though the deals should be looked at as if the option was going to be exercised so I think a franchise interested in being stable should be looking at lining up salary with expected performance wherever possible.

Arrieta would be a terrible idea for the Phillies

Good thing the Braves were smart enough not to draft him.

He may not be done. Thomas Davis of the Carolina Panthers has blown out the same knee 3 times and still plays. Hopefully Lewis is similar

Yeah but that is football. Far less physical than minor league ball.

Rays slash payroll, again. DBacks get their cheap OFer. Yanks get a guy to bridge the gap to Torres/Andujar.

Does this officially close the door on any chance the Yanks sign Mous?
