Apparently AA kicked the tires and asked the Giants about Buster Posey before the July 31 deadline.

I'm starting to feel more and more that the free agency route might be best to address catcher. Grandal seems like he would be the best fit for us and I think a tandem with him and Suzuki would work fairly well.

Another bullet dodged. Posey is out for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, in Tampa Bay, Mallex Smith has produced 3.1 WAR with an .810 OPS.

He will most likely be a 3.5 win player with an OBP well north of .350 and 30+ SBs by the end of the season.

Last year when Gohara was looking like a future #1 or #2, wasn't the groupthink that the Mallex trade was a pretty good deal?

I’m not concerned about group think.

When the trade was made, my criticism was trading a guy who profiled as a 2 win CFer with the potential for a bit more before the Braves knew if they’d get that little bit more. I wasn’t ceazy about trading him before they needed to for an arm that was even more risky than pitchers usually are.

Looked like that thinking was premature. He's pretty much what Seattle thought of him at the time.

At least we came out a little better than Seattle. Smyly may never pitch again.

I'm not sure how many here have lost a parent at a young age, but I assure you it's derailing. Gohara has had a bad year but he's still working and hasn't gotten into any off field trouble. That shows quite a bit of character. I expect a resurgence next year.

Common sense tells you the Braves were not keeping both Mallex and Ender.

If they picked wrong they picked wrong, but when I suggested Ender wasn’t that great a month ago people didn’t take it well.

Yes that was a horrible series of transactions. I like their initial trade to get Mallex but then to move him was dumb.

I don't think anybody thinks he is great but he is above average. I don't think Mallex is as good as he is currently playing either.

That being said Ender is a better centerfielder than Mallex and fits well on this team which prioritizes defense.

Keeping Ender over Mallex was an acceptable decision....probably the correct decision.

However, that doesn’t mean they had to flip Mallex for yet another risky arm. Mallex could have easily stayed in AAA a while without losing any value.

It may be that I'm turning in to a big ole softie the older I get, but I wrote off Gohara's season as sooon as I heard the news.

It'll take some time off and someone he trusts getting in his head and teaching him hwo to use the pain, until he's anything more than going through the motions.
