"The Giants and Mariners are among the teams that will receive meetings with Shohei Ohtani and his representatives next week, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reports (Twitter link). It isn’t known who the other finalists are in the Ohtani sweepstakes, though the Yankees are one of the teams that didn’t make the cut, as Yankees GM Brian Cashman told NJ.com’s Brendan Kuty and other reporters.

According to Cashman, as per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, Ohtani seems to be leaning towards West Coast teams in smaller markets. This ties to a report from FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman saying that Ohtani’s reps are informing teams that the two-way star would prefer a smaller market."

SF isn't exactly a small market, but if they got Stanton and Ohtani...damn.

I'm guessing Mariners or Angels get Ohtani

Twins beat guy reported that the Twins official who received notification from Ohtani's camp that they were out said the list was the Cubs, Mariners, Dodgers, Angels, Padres, and Giants.

Brian Cashman said that a team "on the West Coast in a small market" would be very happy with Ohtani's final decision. In media market size, that'd be #3 (Cubs), #14 (Mariners), #2 (Angels, Dodgers), #6 (Giants), and #28 (Padres). So, the Padres will have the clear #1 farm system this offseason!

Seriously, I'd love to see Ohtani on the Angels. Mike Trout would finally get due coverage. He'd probably win the next 5 MVPs unanimously.
Gus: You don't know anything about scouting.
    Johnny: Don't tell them that.

That’s rough for the twins wonder what they will do for pitching, they were hopeful, no?

They were making a legit push, but they're also presenting a significant offer for Darvish, which the same beat guy says will give Darvish the ability to earn more than anywhere else, but the structure will be heavily into years 3-4, as the team is trimming down significant salary after 2018 and after 2019 with their core all just starting arbitration in 2019 for the first time, so likely still in "cheap arbitration" when Darvish is getting paid heaviest. It'd likely break down to an ability to make well over $30M annually over 4 guaranteed years and a vesting 5th year with a 6th year option.

Add the Rangers to the list of teams getting to meet with Ohtani.

I agree with wanting to see Ohtani on the Angels, but I haven’t seen anything that suggests they are still in or out.

Cardinals trade Aledmys Diaz to Blue Jays for JB Woodman.
Seems like a small price. Diaz was bad last year, but good in '16. Wonder if he would've been a decent flyer to try at 3B, especially for that low acquisition cost.

This is why Moore would have been a terrible hire for the Braves, and why anyone who was for it is clueless:

    https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/...r-rebuild.html

The Royals “expect to step back for perhaps three seasons”. Haven't we learned yet that rebuilds take longer than 3 years? Moronic plans like this could lead to the Royals making Braves-esque terrible rebuild moves like...team officials “see rebuilding scenarios that include” Hosmer in the fold, and trading Duffy (4 years of control) isn't a certainty.

They are considering a rebuild where they sink $100M+ into a 1B who will be declining and expensive when they are on the upswing, and will waste the value of their most valuable pitching asset on losing teams. All because they think they are so smart they can rebuild in 3 years. Sound familiar?

This is exactly the type of clueless leadership Moore would have brought to the Braves, and I am very grateful it didn't happen. I don't care how AA does...he will be doing a better job than Moore would have.

Ouch, tough to be lumped in with the O's and Marlins...

1:05 How many hours do you think the other 23 teams spent on a pitch to Ohtani, only to be thrown out before even getting to meet with him?
    Travis Sawchik
1:05 Hundreds of man-hours, but you have to do it
    1:06 Well, unless you're MIA/BAL/ATL

The fact that the Royals didn't start their rebuild at some point last year just blows my mind. If they could have gotten something of value out of their departing assets, perhaps they could have shaved a year or so off of a rebuild. But as it stands right now, they are in a really rough spot.

If the Angels can somehow get Ohtani, it could almost single handedly bring that franchise back from the brink of disaster. I've been saying for a while that the Angels were in one of the worst positions in baseball. With an awful farm system, albatross contracts, and their most valuable asset being the most cost prohibitive player in baseball (basically destroying any ideas of a rebuild). But with their recent signings, if they could pull off getting Ohtani as well, they would be in a great position to create a 2-3 year competitive window.

But, but, but we've been told the worst thing you can possibly do is shave time off a rebuild!!!

Just another example of the spreadsheets ignoring the "real world". DMGM was given the opportunity to keep their team together for the fans. Their non-corporate owner not only is going nowhere, he gave the go-ahead for them to take a shot, and backed up his decision by not allowing Dayton to leave even though it didn't work out in the end. Not only did he not fire him, he supported him so much he didn't give the Braves permission to talk to him.

The fans in Kansas City will be quite happy with the parade they had and the memories that group created for them well beyond the next summer they're in a race again.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Looks like the Cards are dead-set on getting one of the Marlins' OFs no matter what with the Mikolas signing.

Or maybe they're just as dumb as the Braves and have decided to load up on arms.

You have just successfully linked 3 topics that have nothing to do with each other into a single moronic statement.

Congrats...you've achieved a new level of stupid!! List that accomplishment on your bench add!!

    Cubs sign Chatwood - 3 years/$38 million.

    Pretty good gamble IMO.

    Chatwood: 3/38
    FG prediction: 3/30
    MLBTR prediction 3/20

Mid-tier guys who sign early typically do better than mid-tier guys who sign late. Chatwood's youth likely made him the preference for the Cubs "cheap SP" addition.

I'm guessing they get Cobb (FG: 4/60, MLBTR: 4/48) as their "expensive SP" addition.

Sure, but they will have the ability to sign multiple Braves prospects and have 4 picks in the top 40 of the draft this season. If you want to jump-start a team's rebuild, that's a pretty good way to begin.

Negret and Del Rosario were a pretty good start.
