    Today In Baseball History: October, Part II

    Had to do a new thread. New posts weren’t showing up in the other one

    October 17th:

    1960: The NL owners vote for new expansion teams in New York and Houston.

    1964: The Yankees fire manager Yogi Berra.

    1964: Johnny Keane resigns as Cardinals manager.

    1966: Tigers interim manager Bob Swift dies of cancer at age 51. He took over for Charlie Dressen, who suffered a heart attack in May before he passed late in the Summer.

    1967: The Red Sox Dick Williams is named Manager of the Year.

    1971: The Pirates defeat the Orioles in Game 7 to win the World Series.

    1978: The Yankees defeat the Dodgers 7-2 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

    1979: The Pirates defeat the Orioles 4-1 In Game 7 to win the World Series.

    1985: Lou Piniella replaces Billy Martin as Yankees manager.

    1987: In Game 1, The Twins beat the Cardinals 10-1 in the first World Series game played indoors.

    1989: Before Game 3 of the World Series between the A’s and Giants in San Francisco, a major 6.9 earthquake strikes the Bay Area. Candlestick Park would be evacuated and the Series is indefinitely postponed.


    2000: The Yankees win another AL pennant with a 9-7 win over the Mariners.

    2005: An out away from their first pennant, The Astros are stunned by Albert Pujols’ three run homer, giving the Cardinals a 5-4 win.

    1950: Connie Mack retires as manager of the A’s. He finishes his career with a record of 3,731-3,948, the most wins and losses for any manager in ML history.

    1960: Five days after losing to the Pirates in Game 7, the Yankees, believing he’s too old to manage, fire Casey Stengel.

    1967: To avoid a legal battle after Charley Finley moves the A’s to Oakland, the AL awards a new expansion team to Kansas City. A new team, the future ill fated Pilots, is also awarded to Seattle.

    1977: Reggie Jackson hits three home runs, leading the Yankees to an 8-4 win over the Dodgers in Game 6 and the World Series title.

    2001: Larry Dierker resigns as Astros manager.

    2010: The Mariners name Eric Wedge manager.

    2012: The Tigers defeat the Yankees 8-1 to finish an ALCS sweep.

    2013: The Cardinals defeat the Dodgers 9-0 in Game 6 to win the NLCS.

    1931: Mickey Mantle is born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma.

    1964: Former Cardinals manager Johnny Keane is named the Yankees new skipper. Meanwhile, the Cardinals name Red Schoendienst as their manager to replace Keane.

    1982: The Cardinals defeat the Brewers 6-3 In Game 7 to win the World Series.

    1988: The Dodgers defeat the heavily favored A’s 5-1 In Game 5 to win the World Series.

    2000: The Blue Jays sign Carlos Delgado to a four year deal worth $68 million.

    2004: The Red Sox defeat the Yankees 10-3 in Game 7 of the ALCS, becoming the first team to win a best of seven series after losing the first three games.

    2012: The Red Sox name John Farrell manager.

    1973: The A’s defeat the Mets 5-2 in Game 7 to win their second straight World Series title.

    1975: Carlton Fisk’s walk-off home run gives the Red Sox the win and forces a Game 7 of the World Series against the Reds.

    1976: The Reds defeat the Yankees 7-2 to finish a World Series sweep.

    1980: The Phillies defeat the Royals 4-1 In Game 6 to win their first World Series title in the team’s 98 year history.

    1998: The Yankees defeat the Padres 3-0 to finish a World Series sweep.

    2004: The Cardinals defeat the Astros 5-2 In Game 7 to win the NLCS.

    2009: The Phillies defeat the Dodgers 10-4 in Game 5 to win the NLCS.

    1974: The Giants trade Bobby Bonds to the Yankees for Bobby Murcer.

    1975: Joe Morgan’s RBI single in the ninth proves to be the difference as the Reds defeat the Red Sox 4-3 In the seventh game of the World Series.

    2011: Albert Pujols hits three home runs in the Cardinals 16-7 victory over the Rangers in Game 3 of the World Series.

    1945: Dodgers President Branch Rickey announces the team has signed two black players in Jackie Robinson and pitcher Johnny Wright. They will be assigned to the team’s AAA team in Montreal.

    1993: Joe Carter hits a walk-off home run off Mitch Williams to give the Blue Jays an 8-6 win over the Phillies in Game 6 and the World Series title.


    1998: The Dodgers name Dave’s Johnson manager.

    2000: The Pirates name Lloyd McClendon manager.

    2010: The Giants defeat The Phillies 3-2 in Game 6 to win the NLCS.

    2014: Joe Maddon exercises an opt out in his contract, ending his time as Rays manager.

    2015: The Royals defeat the Blue Jays 4-3 In Game 6, winning their second straight AL pennant.

    1908: The baseball anthem “Take Me Out To the Ballgame” is introduced for the first time.

    1972: Jackie Robinson dies at age 53.

    1992: The Blue Jays defeat the Braves 4-3 In Game 6 to win the World Series.

    2000: The Yankees lose Game 3 to the Mets, ending their record 14 game World Series winning streak.

    2006: The Players Association and MLB announces a new five year collective bargaining agreement.

    1939: Joe DiMaggio wins his first MVP award.

    1955: The Indians trade Larry Doby to the White Sox for Jim Busby and Chico Carrasquel.

    1965: The Cubs hire Leo Durocher as manager and give him complete authority on the field.

    1971: Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez is born in Manoguayabo, Dominican Republic.

    1978: The Padres Gaylord Perry wins the NL Cy Young, becoming the first to win it in both leagues. He won it in the AL with the Indians in 1972.

    1986: In the bottom of the tenth of Game 6, the Mets tie the game on a wild pitch, the win the game when Mookie Wilson’s grounder goes between the legs of Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner. The dramatic win forces the World Series to a seventh game.


    1987: The Twins defeat the Cardinals 4-2 In Game 7 to win the World Series.

    2009: The Indians name Manny Acta manager.

    2009: The Yankees win the AL pennant with a 5-2 win over the Angels.

    2010: The Blue Jays name John Farrell manager.

    1911: The A’s defeat the Giants 13-2 In Game 6 to win the World Series.

    1940: Hank Greenberg wins the AL MVP.

    1950: Phil Rizzuto is named AL MVP.

    1960: The AL approves the move of the Senators to Minnesota, which then becomes the Twins. A new expansion franchise is put in Washington for the next season along with one in Los Angeles.

    1980: The Red Sox name Ralph Houk manager.

    1982: Steve Carlton becomes the first to win four Cy Young Awards.

    1985: With The Cardinals leading Game 6 by a run in the bottom of the ninth and three outs from winning the World Series, first base umpire Don Denkinger incorrectly calls the Royals Jorge Orta safe when replays show Todd Worrell caught a throw from first baseman Jack Clark and got to the bag first. The controversial play allows Dane Iorg to hit a walk-off two run single, giving the Royals a 2-1 win and force a Game 7.

    1996: The Yankees defeat the Braves 3-2 In Game 6 to win the World Series.

    1997: In the bottom of the 11th inning of Game 7, Edgar Renteria hits a single that allows Craig Counsell to score the winning run, giving the Marlins a 3-2 win over the Indians and the World Series title.


    1998: The Mets and Mike Piazza agree to a seven year deal worth $91 million.

    2000: The Yankees defeat the Mets 4-2 in Game 5 to win their third straight World Series title.

    2002: Trailing 5-0 In the seventh inning of Game 6 and appearing to be losing the series, the Angels stage an incredible rally, scoring six runs to win the game 6-5 and force the World Series to Game 7.

    2005: The White Sox defeat the Astros 1-0 In Game 7 to finish a World Series sweep and win their first since 1917.

    2013: With runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Red Sox second basemen Dustin Pedoria easily throws out the Cardinals Yadier Molina at the plate. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchhia tries to throw out Allen Craig at third, but his throw is errant. Craig collides with Will Middlebrooks and appears to be thrown out at home. However, umpires rule obstruction, and the Cardinals are awarded a 5-4 win in Game 3.


    2014: Cardinals rookie outfielder Oscar Tavares dies in a car wreck in the Dominican Republic at the age of 22.

    1954: After 274 days of marriage, actress Marilyn Monroe files for divorce from Joe DiMaggio.

    1972: The Braves trade Rico Carty to the Rangers for pitcher Jim Panther.

    1985: The Royals defeat the Cardinals 11-0 In Game 7 to win the World Series.

    1986: The Mets defeat the Red Sox 8-5 In Game 7 to win the World Series.

    1989: The World Series resumes after a ten day delay in San Francisco after the Bay Area earthquake. The A’s defeat the Giants 13-7 to take a 3-0 Series lead.

    1991: After ten shutout innings from Jack Morris, Gene Larkin hits a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth of Game 7, giving the Twins a 1-0 win over the Braves and taking the World Series title.

    1998: President Bill Clinton signs a law that overrides part of a 1922 Supreme Court ruling that exempted baseball from antitrust laws on grounds that it was not considered interstate commerce. The exemption had allowed owners to use the reserve clause that didn’t allow players bargaining rights.

    1999: The Yankees defeat the Braves 4-1 to finish a World Series sweep.

    2002: The Angels defeat the Giants 4-1 In Game 7 to win the World Series.

    2003: The Red Sox announce they will not renew the contract of manager Grady Little.

    2004: The Red Sox defeat the Cardinals 3-0 to finish a World Series sweep and win their first title since 1918.

    2006: The Cardinals defeat the Tigers 4-2 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

    2006: Bruce Bochy leaves the Padres to become the new manager of the division rival Giants.

    2013: In Game 4, Red Sox pitcher Koji Uehara picks Kolten Wong off first base, ending the game with the Red Sox winning 4-2 and tying the series. It was the first game in World Series history to end on a pickoff.

    1954: The owners vote down a potential sale of the Philadelphia A’s to a hometown syndicate.

    1979: Dick Howser takes over as Yankees manager for Billy Martin.

    1981: The Dodgers defeat the Yankees 9-2 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

    1989: The A’s defeat the Giants 9-6 to finish a World Series sweep.

    1995: The Braves defeat the Indians 1-0 in Game 6 to win the World Series. Tom Glavine allows one hit over eight innngs with Mark Wohlers pitching a perfect ninth. David Justice provides the only run with a home run in the sixth.




    2002: The Devil Rays name Lou Piniella manager.

    2007: The Red Sox defeat the Rockies 4-3 to finish a World Series sweep.

    2007: During Game 4 of the World Series, Alex Rodriguez announces he will opt out of his contract with the Yankees.

    2011: The Cardinals defeat the Rangers 6-2 In Game 7 to win the World Series.

    1991: The Yankees name Buck Showalter manager.

    1991: The Braves Bobby Cox is named NL Manager of the Year, becoming the first to win the honor in both leagues. He won it in the AL while managing the Blue Jays in 1985.

    2008: Finishing The first suspended game in Series history, the Phillies beat the Rays 4-3 In Game 5, winning the World Series.

    1963: Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax is named NL MVP.

    1974: The A’s Catfish Hunter wins the AL Cy Young.

    1975: Giants pitcher John Montefusco is named NL Rookie of the Year.

    1986: The Orioles trade Storm Davis to the Padres for Terry Kennedy and minor leaguer Mark Williamson.

    2000: The Diamondbacks name Bob Brenley manager.

    2001: Wearing a FDNY jacket, President George W. Bush throws the ceremonial first pitch before Game 3 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. He climbs to the top of the mound, gives a thumbs up and delights the packed crowd with a perfect strike.


    2007: The Yankees name Joe Girardi manager.

    2008: The Brewers name Ken Macha manager.

    2013: The Red Sox defeat the Cardinals 6-1 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

    2001: In Game 4, the Yankees Tino Martinez ties the game with a home run in the bottom of the ninth. Then in the bottom of the tenth, Derek Jeter hits a walk-off homer, giving New York a 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

    2011: Theo Epstein resigns as Red Sox General Manager.

    2011: Just days after leading the Cardinals to a World Series title, manager Tony La Russa announces his retirement. His managerial record finishes at 2,728-2,365, making him the third winningest manager in ML history, behind only Connie Mack and John McGraw.

    2013: The Nationals name Matt Williams manager.

    2014: After just one season, Rick Renteria is dismissed as Cubs manager. The decision comes after Joe Maddon becomes available after he resigned as Rays manager.
