Nunez makes sense for this year and next year given the questions with Swanson and third base. I do not see signing him blocking Camargo. If Camargo plays well enough then he and Nunez both may take time away from Swanson if he fails again and Nunez could play some OF too.

That's right. Two of Camargo/Swanson/Nunez would get regular playing time and the third guy would be the super sub. Both this year and next. Signing Nunez would not preclude our upgrading at both left and third next off-season. Nor does it block Riley if he emerges as the best choice for third.

I think a better use of that money is to structure contract extensions for Acuna/Albies/Gohara where we front more money than the typically extension.

Is that allowable with the CBA?

No matter what we do, I don't think we will be able to extend Acuna or Albies more than one year (MAYBE two) beyond arbitration. That is why gaining that extra arb year is so pivotal with Acuna. In regards to Gohara, I wouldn't even try to extend him. It is very likely that the majority of his value will come during his controllable years.

On an off note, I think that we may be entering a dark age for pitchers in the future. I think that Front Offices are starting to recognize the major downside to signing pitcher long term beyond their initial six years. This is going to severely limit the earning potential of pitchers in the future. I think that talented amateurs are going to start recognizing this and start to gear more towards being a position player, thus limiting the talent pool for pitching. I think in a decade we could be seeing an explosion in offensive production and the talent pool of pitchers entering a downward trajectory. I know there are a lot of moving pieces to this theory that I just started pondering, but I do think it could be a legitimate concern going forward.

Acuna is going to hit a lot of HRs and will get paid well in arbitration. He will be hard to extend. I expect him to go the year to year route taken by recent young stars like Heyward, Machado, Bryant, Lindor, and Harper.

Albies will produce in ways that aren't rewarded as richly in arbitration. He should be easier to extend, and I think AA should be looking to give him the Tim Anderson extension right now (6/25 plus 2 option years). If they wait until he produces a 2-3 win season in 2018, the price of an extension next offseason will more than double.

Gohara is young enough that a Teheran-like extension might make sense for him if he shows well this season. Guaranteeing his age 22-26 seasons in exchange for options over 2-3 seasons of his late 20s might prove to be a good gamble. It will likely take something like Romero's deal (5/30 plus 1 option) or Kluber's (5/38 plus 2 options) to get it done.

Acuna has made so little and got such a small signing bonus that I could see him signing an extension after his 1st season with a nice signing bonus.

I just don’t see that happening much anymore going forward. These kids are going to know that they’re going to make so much more just waiting for arbitration and then getting that huge contract in FA. They’re better off getting paid rookie amounts for a few years for the huge payday rather than getting a raise now but missing out on the big money in a few years.

Not exactly betting on him to be good all of a sudden, but we might have our first "best shape of my life" of the spring.
I ran into him after the Hudson and Simpson HoF ceremony. He’s a stick. Doesn’t surprise me he’s claiming 30 lbs.

Apparently ESPN's mobile app sent a notification saying the Braves could be a potential landing spot. People have been talking about it on Twitter.

Braves are this year’s mystery team.

If the Braves give JDM $125M+ after finally ditching Kemp, I will have lost all faith in AA.

Jose Ramirez signed an extension after his 1st big season (overall 2nd in service time) which covered his 4 remaining pre-FA years plus 3 additional seasons when you include all the team options. If not for that he would of been able to hit FA going into his age 28 season. Obviously each player and situation is different but I feel Acuna would be a good candidate to sign an extension.

JDM is what Coppy thought Kemp was. A JDM type player would be perfect in 2019 on a 3 year deal. But this isn't the time for that.

I wouldnt hate it, but it goes against the defense that AA wants to be strong at.

Folty lost his arbitration case. So the Braves saved that extra $100k between 2.2 and 2.3 million lol.
