It Is The Single Parent Households

The United States has the HIGHEST RATE of children in single-parent households of any nation in the world.

There are over 18 million fatherless children in the US.

Fathers are absent from approximately 80% of single-parent homes.

Fatherless families are 4x more likely to live in poverty than that for married-couple families.

Fatherless children are more likely to abuse drugs and show signs of delinquent behavior.

Father absence as a predictor of violence is robust for both male and female violence.

70% of juveniles in state-operated institutions come from single-parent homes

Individuals from father-absent homes are 279% more likely to carry guns and deal drugs than their peers

Most adolescents who enter the justice system have suffered from parental abandonment, substance abuse, or a dysfunctional household.

In a study of 75 juvenile delinquents, 66% experienced fatherlessness, 20% had never lived with their father, and 25% had an alcoholic father.

It has been reported that fatherless children are anywhere from 3 to 20 times more likely to be incarcerated than children raised in dual-parent households.

71% of teachers and 90% of law enforcement officials state that the lack of parental supervision at home is a major factor that contributes to violence in schools.

In a study of 56 school shootings, only 10 of the shooters (18%) were raised in a stable home with both biological parents. 82% grew up in either an unstable family environment or grew up without both biological parents together.

Some data suggests 72 percent of adolescent murderers and 70 percent of long-term prison inmates come from fatherless homes

Children who feel closeness to their father are 80% less likely to spend time in jail

75% percent of adolescent patients in substance abuse centers are from fatherless homes.

In its annual “America’s Families and Living Arrangements” data collection, the Bureau examined marriage and family, the living arrangements of older adults and other household characteristics.

It found that a majority of the 73.7 million American children under age 18 live in families with two parents (69 percent)—a decrease from 88 percent in 1960. Of those 50.7 million children living in families with two parents, 47.7 million live with two married parents and 3 million live with two unmarried parents.

Broken down by race, however, the statistics show stark differences. The percentage of White children under 18 who live with both parents almost doubles that of Black children, according to the data. While 74.3 percent of all White children below the age of 18 live with both parents, only 38.7 percent of African-American minors can say the same.

Instead, more than one-third of all Black children in the United States under the age of 18 live with unmarried mothers—compared to 6.5 percent of White children. The figures reflect a general trend: During the 1960-2016 period, the percentage of children living with only their mother nearly tripled from 8 to 23 percent and the percentage of children living with only their father increased from 1 to 4 percent.

Why have fatherless homes skyrocketed since the civil rights era?

All those in positions of leadership and influence who model stable and responsible family life are to be commended.

And all constructive suggestions for alleviating this problem (and it is a problem) are welcomed.

The solution is to not coddle black people as if they can't handle harsh truths.

I'm generally anti-coddling. I can get aboard with that.

Thats literally the only thing that needs to be done and understand that lasting real change takes place over decades and there are no shortcuts.

What is the leftist theory as to why fatherless homes have skyrocketed since the civil rights movement and feminist movement?

There are a variety of situations that lead to this. To me we’re dealing with unintended pregnancies where the parents weren’t ready to raise a family, families that split up after the child was born, and children that were intentionally had outside of stable relationships. The first two are probably far more common but each category has its own reasons.

To me the first thing to do and the easiest is to promote education about and improve access to all forms of family planning. I don’t think it’s a mistake that it’s pretty unusual to see educated affluent young women having children early in single parent households. It must be because they are raised with better morals and are not having sex. That was my experience in college. No one was having sex so not many girls dropped out pregnant lol.

Look at the incarceration rate then and now. Also most women weren't able to make a decent living so having a man in the house with a real job was essential. Parents were also able to discipline their children back then with little fear of CPS. My brother got slapped with a CPS complaint for spanking his child on the butt when he was 9 after he was suspended from school for threatening to stab a teacher. For context my brother was beaten with a bull whip by his mom's BF when he was that age. The ironic thing is if you treat a kid like police or jail staff do it's child abuse but not when the state does it.

Lower levels of education are statistically associated with higher crime rates. This holds true for both violent and property crimes.

One of the MANY POSITIVE externalities that come out of having a well-educated society.

Folks with college educations are also more likely to raise their children in two-family households, to return to the supposed topic of this thread. Seems like YET ANOTHER reason to heavily subsidize higher education.

The current culture is to have a baby for the extra govt subsidies and not finding a suitable mate. Even if not the subsidy, just “I want a baby now” without picking a mate regardless of father’s name or traits. Also of note - the expectation is not necessarily that the man will stick around and be part of the babies life at all. Just a donor

    A college education:

    1) Raises wages relative to a HS education. Across all racial and ethnic groups.

    2) Lowers crime rates. Across all racial and ethnic groups.

    3) Increases the rate of two-parent households. Across all racial and ethnic groups.

    4) Increases life expectancy and improves health. Across all racial and ethnic groups.

Seems like a good investment to me. For both the individual and society.
