This is crazy - two potential canddiates for either the rotation and bullpen.

    Gonzalez already DFAed

Cool. For a second I thought we’d consider Freeman back at 3rd and Gonzalez at 1st.

    HOLY *HIT!!!
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

    Kemp 48?

Looks like we shed a bunch of salary to facilitate getting Kemps long term money off the books. I like it.

Freeman is just going to go back to .265 with 15 HRs now, not sure why everyone is so excited.

    AA doing work.

AGon, Kazmir expire after the year. McCarthy has 1 year and an option left. Culberson is under control for 4 more years.

And not to tell you your business, Okie, but the headline here is clearly "Charlie Culberson to the Braves."

But, see, having Kemp protected Freeman from getting traded.

You could set yourself up for a big splash. Legitimately play in the big boy waters. So much of the core is going to be dirt cheap for 4 years and if the Battery continues to generate tremendous amounts of revenue then the payroll will reflect that.

MLBTR is now reporting the deal--- 1:42 CST

In a stunning swap of big contracts, the Dodgers have traded first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, left-hander Scott Kazmir, right-hander Brandon McCarthy and infielder Charlie Culberson to the Braves in exchange for outfielder Matt Kemp. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to report the news.

Kazmir's injury last year was a hip, not his arm at all, so if he got a clean bill of health on the physical, he could become a regular starter straightaway.

McCarthy was pretty good last year but injured a good bit also.

Julio, Newk, Gohara, McCarthy, and Folty is probably the rotation but things can change of course. Can throw in Kazmir too if he's healthy.

    Crunching the numbers:

    1) Gonzalez already DFAed, we eat 21.5M or almost 3 WAR at market rate

    2) Kazmir at 16M. Probably finished. We eat 2 WAR at market rate

    3) Brandon McCarthy. Expect him to be a 2 win pitcher in 2018 and 1 win pitcher in 2019. Expected surplus value about 1 WAR.

    4) Culberson. Replacement level player.

So cumulatively these four have an expected negative surplus value of negative 4 WAR.

Kemp has an expected negative surplus value of negative 4 WAR.

So I would say its a wash. Any exchange where we get some cash makes it a win.

Additional thought, we basically moved deadweight money out 2019 into 2018. So this may move up our expected opening of our competitive window from 2020 to 2019. From the Dodgers perspective, it makes it easier to get below the luxury tax threshold this year (not sure if this is a priority of theirs).

Additional additional thought. I like the McCarty pickup and think it gives us a solid rotation for 2018.

This looks like a very good first big trade by AA. Maybe a great trade depending upon the cash changing hands.
