Harlan county and a couple of counties around it.

Harlan was made famous by the TV series Justified, where Timothy Olyphant stars as a US Marshal. Great show that at least scratched the surface of the problems in that area with opioids, meth, marijuana, and the worst poverty to be found anywhere in the US.

There is a lot to chew on with respect to crime in both cities and rural areas. There have been some enormous long-term swings. And some worrisome short-term developments. There are serious problems that deserve serious discussion.

I've been watching the New York mayoral race, voting for which just got started. The candidates responding to concerns about crime seem to be doing better. And the ones offering rhetoric about reducing police spending not so well. I'm guessing that there will be an appetite for pragmatic problem-solvers in the next few years. And not just in New York and other big cities.

I note with interest that homicides appear to have peaked in 1989, the year I started working in the city. Coincidence?

Off duty deputy working a grocery store security guard job is one of three shot is South Dekalb. We used to have those guys working security when I managed a grocery store near by. Not a place I would want to be a cop.

Part-time deputy, two others shot following fight over mask in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has learned three people have been shot along Candler Road in DeKalb County, across from South DeKalb Mall.

Officials confirmed to Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne that a DeKalb County deputy has been wounded.


Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes is at the scene and investigators said a man went into the Big Bear store and was asked to put on a mask and an argument broke out with a woman.

Investigators said the part-time deputy tried to break up the fight and all three people ended up getting shot.

Cashier was killed in this instance.

However, I do also think the number of guns in circulations is a factor. A wee bit.

Both are amenable to policy. One with a quicker turnaround than the other.
