There is a lot to chew on with respect to crime in both cities and rural areas. There have been some enormous long-term swings. And some worrisome short-term developments. There are serious problems that deserve serious discussion.

I've been watching the New York mayoral race, voting for which just got started. The candidates responding to concerns about crime seem to be doing better. And the ones offering rhetoric about reducing police spending not so well. I'm guessing that there will be an appetite for pragmatic problem-solvers in the next few years. And not just in New York and other big cities.

For those interested in some data on homicides in New York City, here is a factsheet that presents data from 1950 to 2020.

I note with interest that homicides appear to have peaked in 1989, the year I started working in the city. Coincidence?

Although Japan has one-third the population size of the United States, they have the lowest rate of gun violence in the developed world with a rate of 0.6 compared to 10.5 in the United States. ... Although they do not carry guns, the police visit gun owners homes once a year to make sure peoples guns are kept properly.

    You are hilariously dense.

But when all you do is see guns as the problem and everything is racist it shouldn’t surprise me that you are unable to understand how the family structure impacts gun deaths.

No family structure impacts upbringing and thoughts on right and wrong and decision making.

    I thought that was obvious.

I'm willing to stipulate that family structure matters.

However, I do also think the number of guns in circulations is a factor. A wee bit.

Both are amenable to policy. One with a quicker turnaround than the other.

Like most problems, there are multiple contributing factors. Not so hard to acknowledge.

And some “solutions” are nothing more than lip service photo op while others require real work and commitment.

We don't have to be like Japan to reduce the number of gun deaths. All we have to do is be more like Nebraska. Go Huskers!!
