The Good, Bad, and Ugly of ST so far

Small sample size, but some insight might be gained so far.

The Good --- Albies is showing why he belongs. 4-11, .364

The Bad--- Adams is 0 for 10

The Ugly -- Chuck Hernandez is still the pitching coach. Throwers are in sync with Hernandez' ideas, 29 BBs, 31 Ks. Bring Johnny Sain back from the dead.

I wouldn't worry about Adams. Best case he's better than Markakis, worst case he warms Acuna's spot.

Lane Adams cannot be 0-10 when he went 1-4 with a double today: https://www.mlb.com/gameday/national...ox,game=533888.

That said, Adams starting out slow in Spring Training means nothing. Folks make too much of big and slow starts during ST every year.

I do agree with you on the ugly, Braves need a new pitching coach ASAP.

I'd add to the good, Gomez. That kid looks impressive so far. Soroka too despite that one hanger for the line drive homer the other day.

BTW, Lane Adams is a career .192 hitter in ST with a .585 OPS, he starts slow in ST every year including last year. What matters is the over .800 OPS he put up when it counted last year.

I had no clue anyone even bothered keeping career ST stats.

Anyway odds are Adams won't be much for us. He's 28, has a grand total of 128 PA in his career. His numbers last year are almost certainly flukey as he never showed that much power, but more importantly he had a .368 BABIP.

Assuming the likely scenario of those numbers normalizing, he loses all offensive value.

True, but I’d be way more exited to see any potential he and Tucker may have over the known suck of Markakis.

My random brain dump based on what I’ve seen (no stats mean anything right now).

    - Albies is feasting on first pitch fastballs. When the league catches on he will have to adjust.

    - Swanson is showing he can still handle any fastball, but has yet to show improvement against sliders.

    - Acuna has consistently struggled with MLB sequencing. The only hard hit ball I’ve seen from him came against 4 straight fastballs.

    - Tucker looks pretty good so far. He should be the LFer with Lane and Santana fighting for the 4th OF job.

    - Gomez looks like he could be a legit setup option for the BP.

    - Soroka looks like he may be the least risky 20 year old SP prospect in the game.

    - Allard has looked as bad as Soroka has looked good.

    - Wright’s slider looks legit, the rest I’m not sure is better than average.

    - Gohara hasn’t pitched due to a leg injury. That isn’t the best news for a guy that has his physical conditioning as a major concern.

Gomez is the biggest story of spring training for me so far.

I’m not sure Lane Adams showing he is in fact Lane Adams should really make anyone’s news feed around here.

yeah but it would be cool to have a Gomez and an Adams on the opening day roster...it would be a sign from Allah.

I marked him as an interesting piece after I saw him throw to his first batter in ST.

He could very well be this year's Sam Freeman.

He looks like he could be a good reliever. He was really good last year, not sure why the yankees didn't give him a look but I'm guessing it was to protect a better player/prospect.

Kazmir probably can't get by on 85-86 velocity. In recent years he's been at 90-92.

Acuna starting to warm up hitting .421 with a homer in yesterday to right center is a great sign.

    Soroka looks awesome

    Albies looks good

I see him as a Chris Carpenter type pitcher. Hopefully without the injuries.

What have I missed over the years? As I remember ST from Tinker Field days in Orlando, the idea was to put together the team that was going to take the field on OD. Didn't see players from D, C, ball and very few from B ball. Some more qualified A ball players were there. I'd guess the ST roster was about 40 players, not 50 or more like today.

There are Braves playing in ST games that I have never heard of or seen any press about. I seriously doubt that Didder, Colon, Decker and many others have better than a 5% chance of making the 40 man, much less the 25 man.

I guess the greed of owners has dictated so many games in ST and thus so many players are needed. Seems like the law of deminishing returns would take over at some point.
