Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Braves have "at least checked in on" free agent closer Greg Holland.
Heyman notes that there is "no evidence the talks have gone very far to this point, and Braves people are telling folks they have limited funds left." Holland should come relatively cheap with Opening Day fast approaching, but there's been no real movement toward an agreement with any club. Heyman also suggests the Cardinals, Angels, Royals, and Rangers as possible fits for the 32-year-old right-hander.

Greg Holland on a one year 5 million deal with a 10 million team option is definitely worth the 4th, or whatever draft pick it is, to sign.

Greg Holland is basically a premium version of 2015 Jason Grilli, who would have definitely been traded for something more valuable than a mid-round pick.

Think of it this way - the Braves are in a position where they should be willing to pay Holland more than other teams because the draft pick compensation is much less valuable. The Braves could use this signing as a form a prospect arbitrage where they can pay Holland now and trade him to a team later on that may value Holland more, but were unwilling to surrender a first round pick.

Hypothetically -

Braves: Value Holland at 1 year 7 million, but are able to offer 5 million if you assume they value the 4th round pick at 2 million (draft pick values completely arbitrary)

Team B: Value Holland at 1 year 10 million, but are only willing to offer 2 million because they value their first round pick at 8 million.

So the Braves sign Holland for 5 million and later in the season, if/when they fall out of contention, trade Holland to Team B for a prospect worth less than the value of the first round pick of Team B. Effectively, the Braves purchased this prospect from Team B.

Braves clearly have less than $10M to spend in 2018, and probably less than $7M.

It would have to be something like a back loaded 2/15 deal plus a $10M option with a $1M buyout, with ~$5M being paid in 2018.

Holland badly overplayed his hand (like several FAs) and is probably best served waiting for a contender to lose a premium BP arm to injury.

I think it'd be a really smart to sign him to 1 year deal with a mutual option. Assuming he pitches like last year, he'd be incredibly easy to move at the deadline for possibly a better prospect than we'd likely draft.
