Julio Teheran to be Opening Day starter

Per the Braves official twitter: https://twitter.com/FOXSportsBraves/...77082763632640

This isn't unexpected, but still, news is news.

I predict his first start he'll go 7 strong innings and everyone will be hyped thinking he's gonna turn into the TOR pitcher.

Next start its back to 85 pitches after 4 1/3 innings.

Followed by Folty in game 2.

IMO, Teheran is an Opening Pitcher as opposed to a pitcher who starts on Opening Day. This will be his 5th consecutive year as OD pitcher for the Braves.

Let me guess...trade him as soon as we can?

Now you've gone and done it.... We will now have to read about what could have been had the FO not been too stupid to trade him earlier.

Does anyone think the Braves should have traded Freddie Freeman?

I actually think this is the yeah Julio could be traded at the deadline. McCarthy has an option for next year and is cheaper than Julio. IF Folty and Newcomb are doing well. If Gohara comes back and does decent. IF Soroka is still dominating. That’s a lot of “ifs”, but not exactly out of the question. He’ll be making he bigger money in his contract from here on out. If those names above pitch to their talent...all five have better stuff than Julio at this point. He would be the odd man out, with even more guys in line for next year.

You just can't count on McCarthy to be healthy. Julio is also at the point you aren't going to get much for him. He's still more valuable to the Braves than a possible 50 FV prospect. Pitching depth is also super valuable so even if all those IFs work then you roll with a 6 man rotation and keep guys super fresh.

I get that. I was not really counting on McCarthy for next year, but he could do the Morton thing and stay healty. You still have Wright and a few others next year. Just saying if they all are pitching well (and chances are that won’t happen), I could see him being moved at the deadline if there is a log jam and they want Soroka up. The most valuable part of his contract is over. Depending on how he is pitching...if he is just pitching average...they may want the 11mil off the books, because they have cheaper options that can replace that production.

I'm firmly there with you. Always have been. Doesn't mean it won't happen but I hope he pitches well for the rest of his Braves career.

If all that is happening, we're likely in contention and will not be trading JT.

Folty? Nope. JT is the man. I'm glad he's the opening day starter.
