I'm not giving up on Teheran after a couple of bad outings. It's dead arm season and he still knows how to pitch. He may not be a true TOR guy or live up to his 5 opening day starts in a row, but he's still serviceable and can take the ball every 5 days.

It would be nice to see what getting passed in the pecking order by some younger arms would do to Teheran will to win. Hopefully Folty, Soroka, Gohara and others can continue their upward trend and light a fire under Julio.

Should've been traded along with everyone besides Freeman.
But if we don't know what the offers were, how can we judge the decision to retain him. I would have been alright with trading Teheran, but if the offers weren't that great, I don't think it's a slam dunk decision.

The decision to keep Julio was likely based on the need/want to field a competitive team in 2017 and open Suntrust with a familiar face. We may not have gotten optimal offers for Julio but that didn't stop the Braves from trading other players.

Really, the only time they were going to get much back was probably prior to the 2015 season. He was never a dominant stuff guy and he was outperforming peripherals. After 2015, I never got the sense that any organization was particularly impressed with him.

They tried to shop in 2016, but my guess is they didn't really get anything very appealing offered. He was definitely available though and probably part of several proposed deals I think.

At this point, the 11m for a fourth or fifth starter is a maybe a tad too much but it is not outrageous. Definitely, freeing that money would be nice though, but maybe there isn't that much on the market to spend it on.

    Who is Teahearn?

Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Safe to say ol' Tehearn has righted the ship after his gnarly start and despite his continued reduced velocity...to me, it is and always has been a question of command. He goes through long stretches of impeccable command, then gets a little shaky and gets rocked from time to time. Given that he's averaging not quite 90, he can't outthrow bad command days.

But he's also smart and gutsy. Because apparently sometime in his past he used the high fastball successfully, he tends to get in trouble with it now that it's below average. He has to be precise with that and only use it in certain situations with certain hitters. I'd just as soon see him ditch the pitch entirely, as he has four more, two of which are plus, but I guess that's not where he is.

I've always liked Julio a lot, I guess for me it's coming to terms that he'll never be an ace, but a real good starter most days who will have stretches where he gets beat up. But he's a good guy to have on the hill way more often than not.

It's a dang shame he didn't learn how to pitch like this when he was younger, if he did he would have fulfilled his ace projections.
Aggression with prospects is fine, but being stupid is not. There should be a way to find a happy medium between a Pirates like idea of being overly cautious with prospects and going stupidly fast with prospects.

Julio is proof positive that fastball command is the single most important piece for a pitcher. You can be aggressive if you are on the outermost quadrants of the zone. So happy to see him pitch like this. That option next year is a bargain.

Interesting Julio side bar I found perusing his career stats.

Every single year of his career his ERA has significantly outperformed his FIP. This includes multiple years of Braves defenses that were mediocre and a year pitching in STP. I think we have reached a point where we can safely say that Julio is about a half run better than his FIP would suggest.

Mostly due to pick offs and pop ups. He gets a lot of those, and they aren't accounted for in FIP.

Or that later in his career it will level out a bit. No one serves their ERA and FIP identically, but those who greatly outpace their ERA those numbers start to haunt them later in their career. And you get terrible ends to careers like you saw with Glavine, Trachsel, and Zito. 2 out of 3 of them were considered the top pitcher in baseball for a stretch when their ERA was outclassing their FIP by a healthy amount, but when they slipped they slipped quite hard.

Ditto. Julio always has these stretches...gets us excited....we keep him...he tanks. Rinse and repeat. He’s looked great, but once again his velocity has dropped this year, and I feel like that screams he may have a major injury soon. This is the year. Folty, Newk, Gohara/Allard, Soroka and keep McCarthy/Sanchez for the vet (won’t get a bag of balls for them anyway).

Now he's someone I'd include in a deal for someone like Machado.
