    Bryce Harper to Braves rumor

I'm not saying any rumor is definite, but I'm not the only one seeing more posts saying he COULD be a realistic target next offseason.

Here's one from Heyman listing us in the top 10. https://www.fanragsports.com/nationa...harper-market/

What're your thoughts? I don't think we can afford him, but man would he be a HUGE get for anyone, but specifically for us. Freeman-Harper-Acuna. DAMN.

Lulz. Any list that has us well ahead of the Yankees simply because Judge and Stanton are both corner OFs is probably not worth the attention.

He would be a perfect fit on the roster.

He is not a perfect fit in a $120M budget.

However, if all the young pitchers pan out, and Riley proves he can be a 2 win guy at 3B, and they get Flowers/Grandal for $10M per year, there WILL be ~$40M available in 2019. They could theoretically afford him in 2019, but that contract would gobble up 30%+ of the payroll, and would significantly hamper the Braves from keeping enough talent around Harper to win anything.

Anyone wanting those 10-1 odds, I'll take bets now.

Pay him 50 million for 2019 and then take the draft pick afterwards

Rather have Machado at 300 million than Harper at 400.

The Nats will have already burned his QO.

However, this might be a case where the Braves could get lucky and benefit with an opt out clause after 2-3 years. Harper's deal will have at least 2 opt outs, and almost certainly a NTC. Sign him for 12/450 and hope he does well enough to opt out after year 2 or 3.

Of course if it backfires and he doesn't opt out, the Braves will be non-contenders for the next decade.

Forgot about the 2nd QO clause. Yeah, anything beyond 2-3 years starts to hamper the Braves ability to sign existing players/add pieces.

Probably because it's easy to list 20 teams that AREN'T in easier than ruling us out.

Dodgers, Padres, Red Sox, Mariners, Marlins, Rays, Orioles, Twins, White Sox, Royals, Indians, Tigers, Angels, Pirates, Cardinals, Brewers, Reds, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Giants...

    yep - we're in the top 10.

With no other corner outfielders even close outside of Acuna and all the money coming up they could realistically sign him. He would bring in a ton of revenue by himself. But it’s a long shot no doubt unless ownership says he’s the guy and want to make a huge huge splash when they start the contention window. Like Enscheff said, Riley would have to be the answer at 3b.

Riley would have to play himself into being The Answer at 3b, and several of the young starters will have to have provided good cause to believe they can hack it (or are on the cusp of hacking it) in the big-league rotation, and Swanson will have to have demonstrated he can be (at minimum) a 2-3 WAR SS. Possible, but seems optimistic—and those are just the pre-conditions for making a viable offer; then Harper has to accept the offer.

I think Donaldson and Machado are more reasonable targets, amongst Tier I 2018-19 free agents.

Right. The only way Harper even remotely fits for the Braves for 2-3 years is is ALL those young guys pan out to fill the rest of the roster very cheaply.

There is simply no way Harper fits on this roster for more than 2-3 years though, so it would be a huge gamble on him deciding to opt out.

Having said that, there is a reason the Yankees bent over backwards to reset their tax penalty and can have Harper/Judge/Stanton rotating LF/RF/DH no problem. The Dodgers went to the trouble of acquiring Kemp to reset their tax penalty, and have a glaring hole in the OF. The Cubs also need an OFer. So do the Giants. The Nats probably will too.

All those teams have more money than the Braves. I would bet on one of them signing him.

He'll be a Yankee. He was made to be on the world's biggest stage.

Hell, they might as well get Machado, too.

They'll trade for a good starter like Fulmer or Archer at the deadline this year, too.

120 wins a legit possibility for them in 2019.
