Until Newcomb fixes that mechanical issue that has him suddenly start missing, badly, he's likely a back end starter that is going to tease you...just like Foltynewicz. And because of that, people are going to continue to moan about no Andrelton.

Honestly, unless he becomes a legit ace it's going to continue even if he has fixed his walk rate to where it's around 3.5 BB/9.
Aggression with prospects is fine, but being stupid is not. There should be a way to find a happy medium between a Pirates like idea of being overly cautious with prospects and going stupidly fast with prospects.

Camargo is starting at short tomorrow btw, Snit mentioned that in the post-game saying Swanson needed to rest his wrist.

Fun fact of the day: Newcomb's walks per nine innings is now under 4. I doubt it'll stay there but he has made good progress with his control.

Remember I wanted Swanson to get a day off this past Sunday. Snit could've avoided this by resting him a game here and there.

And with that comes a 3.17 FIP. Which projects to a 4-5+ win pitcher depending on how many innings he has. The key for Newk being a to end starter will be that walk rate.

    No, I don't. At 5 BB/9, I don't like him (or anybody else). At 3 BB/9, which he's been his last 4-5 starts, I like him a lot.

All about the walks. I think it is safe to say that it won't get worse and it looks like it might get better.

If he gets his walk rate to 3.5/9 he's going to be just fine. Trending in the right direction.

I know Enscheff says it's likely too late to expect any appreciable gain, but the successful teams have outliers and seem to make their own luck. The fact that Newcomb started late makes me think this improvement could stick.

In general, one needs to look past a single statistic for the whole picture. But for Newcomb, you’re right: it pretty much reduces to one number.

I'm glad he seems to also be in that group. Love the mental approach and demeanor both he and Soroka showed on this big stage. Chuck Hernandez may need to be reevaluated.

But how are those walks generated? Is he missing spots by a wide margin consistently. Is the problem correctable (missing arm side). What does the rest of his arsenal look like?

There is just more than looking at bb/9. I'm not arguing he's been good in the past only suggesting there is reason to project future success.

    What issue?
    I’m no mechanical guru

Everything I read on him said it wasn’t mechanical. That is why he was so frustrating

A lot of scouts thought it was mental. Lost focus etc

With people working deeper counts walks can go up. But like others said 5/9 is too many

I didn’t watch but the highlights looked like most of the ks were swinging. Most were missing pitches in the zone. To me that’s what needs to wear off on him from soroka...challenge in the zone. He will give up some hrs

LOL at Todd Frazier bitching about the umpire's strike zone last night. Yeah it was big but it was consistent for both teams all night. Didn't stop the Braves from scoring 7 runs.

Newk would legitimately have to become Lester, Hamels, Price or better for me not to want to unmake that trade. If he's just another Gio (a popular comp lately), then I'll be pleased, but I'd still want Simba over him.

Or better? That's over the top. With the current team construction we have newk doesn't need to be that elite to still want the deal

It doesn't explain swinging at sliders low and off the plate. It doesn't explain swinging at fastballs high and tight. An injured wrist doesn't explain pitch recognition and swinging at pitches out of zone as he did all last year. He's slip[ping back into that mode.
