MONDAY MINORS FINAL 5/7/18: Riley, others on move; Javier finds morning glory

    MOVES
GWINNETT: Austin Riley promoted from Mississippi; Chase Whitley placed on DL
FLORIDA: Jon Kennedy promoted to Gwinnett; Braves release Anferee Seymour; Bryse Wilson promoted to Mississippi.
(Seymour .195-0-6 with four SBs in 24 games with 29 percent K rate. Hit .282 last year at Rome/Florida with 25 percent K rate. Acquired from Marlins in mid-2016 along with Mader for Cervenka.

    WHO'S JAVIER?

Odalvi Javier, 21, was signed by the Braves as a free agent in December of 2014. In 2016, he was 5-1, 2.62 for a bad GCL team. Listen at 6-0, 180, may be growing into his body as this season is the first where he has averaged better than a K per inning. From Puerto Plata, DR.

I thought Tarnok was a starter? Just controlling his innings early on?

Could be. 2 innings is the most he has pitched in a game this season so far

I think they have identified him as a reliever. He started 8 games last year and went 14 innings.

Its very possible but that seems like way too early of an evalutaion. My guess is that they wanted to control his innings last year after pitching for his amateaur career and now making sure that he is still pitching through August while being under the normal innings increase.

I'm pretty sure him in the bullpen is just about controlling innings. He's extremely raw on the mound and still figuring it out there because he was a position player for most of his life. No way they'd give up on a guy starting when he's that young with that kind of stuff this early in his career.

    BA's Hot Prospect Sheet
"The Scoop: When the season began, the Braves had three positions where the team’s 2019 plans were unclear. Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies and Dansby Swanson were set in the infield. Ronald Acuña and Ender Inciarte were going to be two of the outfielders. But third base, one outfield spot and catcher were wide open. Riley, who was just promoted to Triple-A, has played well enough that third base is not really a question mark for 2019 anymore. Riley’s .393/.394/.677 stat line in a month at Double-A this season is even more notable when you remember that he is the youngest hitter in the league. (JJ)"

Can't remember here who was asking for non-brave source to pimp Riley. Here you go

Its been there for almost a year now.

Early reports were quickly deemed obsolete after Riley changed his body.

in keith law's chat he said riley is a 55 defender, maybe more. compared to being about a 40 when drafted.

That’s probably been the biggest leap, the biggest question answered, even more than the initial “long swing”/bat-speed concerns.

Touki has a 2.92 FIP this year at AA with an okay walk rate (and about 13 k's per 9)

In terms of surprise call-up guys, he's towards the top of the list. I could absolutely see him breaking in with the bullpen in the second half.
