    2018 Trade Deadline ROSTERBATION

Finally! We can finally start to entertain the thoughts of possibly being in position to add at the deadline!

The obvious hole is likely going to be 3B (and almost certainly BP), and luckily for the Braves rentals like Machado, Mous and Beltre should be available. BP arms are always available, and always overpriced, but if the Braves are in position to fight for a playoff spot they should look to spend responsibly on BP help.

    To get things rolling...

    Acunamania
1:32 There's no way the Braves trade for Machado, right? I can't see any way they sell off multiple prospects for a rental when they're not just one piece away
    Tim Dierkes
1:33 The Braves are a perfectly reasonable destination for Machado. The team is in first place and they have, let's say, a 15% chance of making the playoffs this year. If they are still in the thick of things a month or so from now, they should go for it.

    Doyers
1:34 Realistically, what sort of prospect package would we have to put together to get Machado this week? Three Top 15 Prospects?
    Tim Dierkes
1:35 Man, I wouldn't think so. I think one Top 15 prospect, at any point, will probably be the best the Orioles can do. I don't really expect them to get a top 15 guy. I could see maybe a Kyle Wright/Mike Soroka level guy on the high end.

Considering what the DBacks paid for JDM last year, I'm hoping the Braves can find a 2-3 month upgrade at 3B without giving up someone like Soroka or Wright. It probably just won't be Machado.

Looking at lefty relievers that non-contending teams might make available, I see:

    1) Old friend Luis Avilan, currently with the White Sox. Career FIP of 2.99 against lefties.

    2) Alex Claudio of the Rangers. Career FIP of 2.84 against lefties.

    3) In the higher rent district there is Brad Hand of the Padres.

I think we can pick up someone like Avilan or Claudio at minimal cost. A pitcher with those sorts of attributes would actually round out our pen quite nicely. Would certainly reduce the risk that Sam Freeman gets burned out. And reduce the temptation to inappropriately use Biddle as a lefty specialist.

**** no to trading any prospects.

And it is laughable if anyone thinks we have the pitching right now to compete with Boston or NYY.

Just sign Machado or Harper in the offseason.

I’m not a huge Fried guy, but I would prefer someone like Mous or Beltre for a package similar to what JDM cost.

As far as BP arms goes, I can’t even hazard a guess now, but some help there is almost a given.

Teams sometimes pay a lot for half-year rentals. A few year ago the Giants gave up Zach Wheeler for half a season of Carlos Beltran at a time when Wheeler was a Top 50 prospect, with the Mets also paying about $4M of remaining salary.

It's possible that if Machado, Beltre and Moose are all available it will depress their price a bit. But I wouldn't be surprised to see Machado go for a fairly steep price.

Herrera needs to be towards the top of the list. I'd hope we would look to trade Allard, Touki, or Anderson before moving Soroka or Wright, no matter who we're targeting.

I wouldn’t be surprised, either; but I also think the market’s evolved since that Wheeler precedent, and teams generally clutch their prospect pearls a lot tighter. But it only takes one team to overpay.

Assuming we're ticketed for the one game wild card, how worth it would it be to give up a top prospect for Machado in what amounts to a coin flip game?

JDM was acquired for essentially 3 warm bodies. That’s what I’d be willing to pay for an upgrade at 3B.

AA is already putting in effort to tamp down expectations for this off season:

    https://www.talkingchop.com/2018/5/7...braves-payroll

"Anthopoulos confirmed that we will be looking at Kimbrel at the end of the season as well as any other big money relievers. Although they will be looking into these options, it may not make sense. This will be dependent on what our needs are and where we are in terms of spending at that time."

"Anthopoulos explained that he doesn’t see the Braves building like the Yankees in terms of spending. He sees us as a mid-size market."

This is all stuff intelli-Braves already knew, but he is setting expectations for casual fans who have spent the last 3+ years under the impression that the Braves could afford guys like Kimbrel, Harper and Machado by now. These fans will be upset when they think the Braves have a ton of money and don't bring in an elite FA.

When Kimbrel gets Jansen-like money, expect to see AA explain that the Braves have already produced Minter, and have a ton of arms that could nearly replicate Kimbrel's production cheaply.

Expect to hear the Braves loosely connected to Machado and Haprer, but when Machado signs for $350M+ and Harper signs for $400M+, AA won't have to explain anything...we all know the Braves aren't getting those guys unless they are able to be "like the Yankees in terms of spending".

That isn't happening with a "mid-sized market" payroll of $120M-$160M (the very top end of reasonable payroll expectations).

Of course, no amount of logic will curtail the inevitable "Just sign Machado or Harper in the offseason" comments from casual fans, but it can help lead some of us to engage in intelligent rosterbation.

I'd prefer Beltre so the Braves can have another all-time 3B that has played for them

Given the fraud those cucks pulled off in Cobb County, a reasonable fan should expect at least a $150M payroll. Its the $120M payroll ceiling that's infuriating.
