Something to keep in mind is this free agency class is going to be flushed with relievers that won't cost us prospects. They'll be expensive based off of last year's spending, but we'll have cash.

This is a dangerous spot for AA. The team isn't likely to be good enough to really win anything even with the addition of help (discounting unrealistic help). Why trade anything away that may be useful in the future based on public relations today?

Markakis and Albies are probably playing above their heads and will see some hard times coming up. Everybody else is probably about where they should be expected to be. As for the pitching, Newcomb is fading and Sanchez is way above where he likely should be, Teheran isn't going to get his FB back on a consistent basis and McCarthy has something weird going on (not rehabbing with the team). Just not a lot of confidence that they can even add and do well.

Note from Bowman: "But their depth creates some margin for error that may lead them to at least consider offering Kolby Allard, Ian Anderson or Max Fried in a deal that would include an above-average return. Kyle Wright, Touki Toussaint, Joey Wentz and Bryse Wilson would draw interest, but there would likely be significant reluctance to move any of them."

Not a fan at all of seeing Anderson in that Allard-Fried group.

Also a proposed deal from Bowman --

It's not as sexy as a return of Manny Machado and Zach Britton, but let's project the Braves receive veteran closer Joakim Soria and corner infielder Matt Davidson from the White Sox in exchange for Fried, corner infielder Rio Ruiz and catcher Alex Jackson.

At an approximate cost of $3 million, Soria would fill a big need within a bullpen that doesn't know how reliable Vizcaino's shoulder will be the rest of the way. Davidson would supply right-handed power off the bench and allow for Johan Camargo to be deployed more versatilely from a defensive aspect. Fried would be reunited with childhood friend Lucas Giolito. Jackson's prospect status has taken a significant hit as it's become clear William Contreras will likely be the Braves' catcher of the future.

If we get some reinforcement for the left side of the infield it would be preferable it be a left-handed hitter or a switch hitter who hits well from the left side. That kind of player would make for a better rotation with Swanson and Camargo. And there are some good options out there like Moose, Cabrera, Solarte and Dietrich.

Also our need in the pen is more for a situational lefty.

I like Soria. He's one I've thought about. He coudl move into the top of the pen moving Viz to the setup and let Minter move into a more situational role. Kind of like EOF was as a dominant lefty but not needed to setup or close.

Has anyone considered going out and getting Scooter Gennett? He can play 3rd and a solid player, maybe get Amir Garrett too.

Indications on Gennett is that the Reds may want to sign him long term.

a point many of us made is we needed to be patient and let an ace develop from within our system...acquiring an ace with multiple years of control is very expensive...btw Folty did a good impersonation of an ace in the first half

I frankly expect Albies to keep streaking his way to .280/.320/.500ish (maybe more like .480 as I don't see him having another HR barrage, think 10-12 HR or so rest of the season). The bigger problem for the offense is Markakis. Can he realistically be expected to even come close to what he's done for the rest of the year? Probably not, and if he can't perform at a semi-star level the offense may be boned without someone else stepping up.
Aggression with prospects is fine, but being stupid is not. There should be a way to find a happy medium between a Pirates like idea of being overly cautious with prospects and going stupidly fast with prospects.

I agree strongly with this. He’s hit too well and is too well liked to be replaced and is the most likely to regress to the mean in a bad way.

the offense has already regressed and i expect it to be mediocre in the second half

however, i expect the pitching to pick up some of the slack...i'm bullish on both the rotation and the pen (which will likely also receive some reinforcement).
