The real answer is to keep him for long relief and spot starting. Let the young guys get the other two rotation spots.

I know he’s a veteran and we have a lot of young guys that need seasoning, but he’s been so good that we definitely can’t take him out of the rotation.

We are in a divisional race. We have to pitch the guy who gives us the best chance to win. Right now that is annabell over fried and Gohard. It is easy. pitch him until someone is better.

Assuming Anibal doesn't implode anytime soon then he is going to get plenty of starts.

Right now the Braves have Newk, Folty, McCarthy, Soroka, Anibal, and Julio. They will all continue to get regular to semi regular starts for the rest of the season assuming health and productivity. AA will continue to use the 10 day DL here and there like the Dodgers did last year to shuffle through them. Fried would be next in line if any of those guys falter one way or the other. I would hope Gohard gets stretched out in AAA as another fallback option. And it's working so far. After tonight the Braves should be 11th in baseball in SP Fip.

    4) Trade him at the deadline
Keep him in rotation until he stops hitting spots or hitters adjust and he gets rocked.

Give Teheran an extended vacation to see if he can get his velocity back together.

on MLB.com, they proposed the Braves offer Soroka, Gohara, Fried and Riley for DeGrom.

Safe to say thats way too much.

Yea, that is crazy. I wouldn't trade Soroka to the Mets period. I'd give them a package of Gohara and Fried for DeGrom. But I'd try to keep Riley out of that deal and add someone else not named Soroka or Riley.

I'd do an Allard, Gohara, Fried, and possibly Riley for DeGrom. There are plenty of options at 3b in the offseason but no way i'd trade Soroka at all. Adding DeGrom to our staff would be straight nasty.

It’s just what a realistic package looks like. They are giving up an ace with two more years of control. Not likely they will be taking back guys with low ceilings.

The recent going rate suggests a top 15 prospect is probably reasonable.

I’d probably pass on what it would take to land him.

    For now.

The thing that makes it all so unfair is that the big market teams just load up on international market and seem to have inexhaustible supply of elites to trade from. Money is nice.

Not just dealing an ace, but more importantly, dealing an ace in the division they will have to face several times a season over at least the next 2 years....the package to get him would be stupid....if i'm the mets, I wouldn't move him to the braves without at least 1 of Acuna/Albies/Soroka.

deGrom likely carries a bit under $100M in surplus value as a ~5 win SP under control for 2.5 years.

That list of prospects is likely worth ~$120M in surplus value, so it is certainly an overpay, but not egregiously so.

As I've been saying for years, any acquisition of a controllable Ace will cost so much in terms of prospects the Braves won't be able to field a contender around the new pitcher...which completely defeats the purpose.

In the end, I think the Braves could form a package that didn't require them to give up anything essential to the next three or four years.

But it would likely be pretty devastating to the range beyond that unless Atlanta got a lot of good results from the farm.

Say Wright, Anderson, Riley, and Pache, which is I think what I heard Jim Callis suggest off the top of his head. That's a lot of ouch, but no one on that list is a definite starter for Braves over next 2-3 years, if ever (though you'd expect all of them would make the majors in some capacity).

Your rotation for two years could be DeGrom, Folty, Newcomb, Soroka plus ... Gohara, Allard, Touki, Weigel?

If you've made that trade, you have to assume they go big in free agency and maybe with more prospect based trades.

I think that's a fair deal that the Mets would ultimately take unless someone came forward with some big hitting prospects, which they need more than anything.

I don't want to do trades where we give fair value. I want to win trades. I would give up a lot for DeGrom but Soroka is a no go.

That is the kind of "mortgage the future to win now" trade that I hope the Braves do not make. I see the benefit, and who knows how prospects will turn out, but the position players especially, seem really damaging to the future of the team.

We just heard AA compliment Camargo's power batting RHed. A quick search of the Statcast data reveals that he has hit the ball pretty hard compared to other Rhed batting 3B.

Average exit velocity on LDs for RHed hitting 3B in 2017-2018 (min 10 LDs):
    1. Sano 99.0
    2. Machado 98.8
    3. Donaldson 98.7
    4. Chapman 97.0
    5. Plouffe 96.9
    6. Camargo 96.5
    7. Andujar 96.4
    8. Martin 96.1
    9. Rendon 95.7
    10. Asdrubel 95.5

It's a much different story batting LHed though...

Average exit velocity on LDs for LHed hitting 3B in 2017-2018 (min 10 LDs):
    1. Gallo 99.9
    2. Solarte 96.5
    3. Devers 96.0
    4. Descalso 95.6
    5. Ruiz 95.8
    6. Valbuena 95.8
    7. Asdrubel 95.2
    ....
    30. Camargo 90.2

Could the more likely 3B targets be Solarte, Descalso, Valbuena or Asdrubel?

Hoping for Solarte or Moose, but I am not sure how much faith I have in Snitker committing to a hard platoon.

A BP arm that can get LHed hitters out is definitely an area of need for the Braves, and it should be possible to fill that need relatively cheaply.

Here is a list of the 47 pitchers who have pitched 25+ innings since the start of 2017 with an FIP and xFIP of 3.5 or less in the 6th-9th innings vs LHed hitters:

    https://www.fangraphs.com/leadersspl...=30&sort=17,-1

Potential targets are only going to be on non-contenders, and they include:

    Tony Watson (Giants)
    Brad Hand (Padres)
    Roberto Osuna (Jays)
    Luis Avilan (White Sox)
    Alex Claudio (Rangers)
    Bryan Shaw (Rockies)
    Jerry Blevins (Mets)
    Aaron Loup (Jays)

    - It's safe to assume Hand isn't going to happen.
    - The Giants may or may not sell, but Watson will only be owed about $1M for RoS 2018, $3.5M in 2019, and a $2.5M option in 2020.
    - Osuna is a stud still in arbitration and getting expensive due to racking up saves. He is unlikely to be the target.
    - Avilan is the poster child for LHed set up rental arm. He would fit nicely.
    - Claudio is a prototypical LHed setup guy under arb control for 3 more years. If used properly he might be an ideal target.
    - Shaw just got big money from the Rockies and isn't a likely target for the Braves.
    - Blevins is another prototypical set up LHer. He will be making less than $2M RoS in 2018 with a $7M option in 2018. He is another solid target.
    - Loup is another prototypical set up LHer. He's a rental making almost nothing RoS in 2018. Solid target.

Based on this list, the best options are Avilan, Claudio, Blevins and Loup. A combo deal with the Mets for Asdrubel and Blevins could represent a one-stop-shop for the Braves...as would Solarte and Loup from the Jays.

I'd trade Soroka as the main piece in a deal for DeGrom.

I have mixed feelings about Soroka. He was really bad in his last start, and his fastball was sitting 89-92 pretty much all game instead of 93-94. His control is not as good as advertised either.

DeGrom is flat out a number 1. Honestly trading Riley would give me more heartburn that Soroka.
