DH's only hit 245/324/402 - 726 this year. 256/328/430 - 758 the year before. DH isn't really a juggernaut offensive position like it once was. Sure you have your Big Papi's still around but not so much for most of the league. Mac has a 122 WRC+ this year. That is really really good. Only 4 qualified catchers hit better this year. Only 5 players that DHed hit better then that too. And only Ortiz is a true DH. The others pretty much split time in the field which is pretty common these days. The days of all-time DHs that can hit like Edgar Martinez seem to be gone.

And I can see someone paying Mac 5 or 6 years and 100 million. Good hitters get the big contracts. Especially good hitters and non hitting positions like catcher. Molina singed his deal after his only good offensive season. And that was without testing free agency. If he were to hit FA right now he would get 25+ easy since he's turned himself into a really good hitter. That and there is much more money in baseball now. If someone like Hunter Pence can get 5/90 without hitting free agency then Mac can get 5/100 or 6/100. Especially from an AL team.

Not if it's an AL team. With the benefit of the DH you can DH him half the time. Mac is going to continue to hit for around a 120 wrc+. That's worth good money for a catcher/DH.

Salty isn't close to the hitter that Mac is despite being similar in 2013. And that with a fluky 370 BABIP. Very likely to be around a 95 WRC+ next year which is about the norm for him.

Itll suck losing him if we do because the braves dont have any good options as a replacement. Gattis is not the answer at c imo. Bethancourt either imo. Hopefully one of the 400 catchers weve drafted recently turn out to be something.

Salty is only 1 year younger and isn't the player McCann is.

Park adjusted stats disagree. Also ignoring that in 2012 Mac was extremely unlucky while Salty was extremely lucky in 2013. Nobody seriously thinks Salty is the type of hitter that Mac is.

Very lucky in 13, and hit .222 with a .288 OBP in 12.

Well Salty definitely wasn't better this yr. In 2012 he was, but Mac was injured. And you are ignoring the previous 7 yrs of work from Mac as well. Mac has established himself as an elite catcher, And he's still relatively young.

Ah thanks, didn't realize DH was that average

If that's the case, we can bring him back through trade, with the other team eating a part of Mac's contract and taking on the rest of BJ's.

Good lord, MLB teams are so stupid.

Will they ever learn. I expect the Reds to make a run at Mac but I think he ends up in the AL.

I agree. McCann is going to want "years" and total contract value over an inflated contract with a shorter term. I'd be tempted to pay him $50 million over three years, but someone is going to give him $75 million over five.

Yeah, I agree, and I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers were higher.

I love Mac, and would love to have him back, but it just doesn't make sense for an NL team on a budget to sign him that kind of long-term deal, and it doesn't make sense for him to sign for a shorter-term deal. He'll probably go to the AL and I wish him the best there.

I'm a little puzzled about which team might break the bank to get McCann.

Even deep-pocketed teams like the Red Sox and Yankees have absorbed painful lessons in recent years about the risks involved in long-term deals for players in their declining years.

The Rangers have almost doubled their payroll in the past three years and their GM indicated at the start of the year that they were at the outer limit of what they could sustain.

Then you add the fact that each of the Red Sox, Yankees and Rangers have at least one impending free agent that they would like to hold on to.

These teams might compete for McCann but I don't see any of them just blowing all other offers out of the water. I just don't see a team out there that would do that with McCann.

My completely unsubstantiated theory is that he really wanted to stay in Atlanta near his family, but the Braves told him midseason that they weren't gonna be able to afford him. That's why he was so grumpy and on edge for the last part of the year and into the playoffs, because he knew he was gonna have to uproot his family and stuff.
