Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics, new stadiums, and expansion discussion

Figured we needed a thread to talk about stadium issues and the impending expansion. Manfred has been pretty clear about wanting 32 teams.

So . . . do you guys think the Rays will work things out in Ybor? I hope so.

I think the Athletics will probably move much like the Raiders. Maybe to Vegas.

Who will the two expansion teams be? Lots of buzz about Portland (they have a group of investors with private cash to build a park) and Montreal lately.

Not to be overlooked: The Diamondbacks are probably getting a new stadium in Scottsdale.

And we all know about the Rangers new park being built next to JerryWorld in Arlington.

As long as they do it in such a way to get rid of interleague every day and leave the DH out of the NL I will be happy. I would love to see the Astros back in the NL but that's not happening. Btw, I would be fine using DH across the board in interleague and WS. Take away the whole argument.

Whatever it takes to get the Astros back to the NL and the Brewers back to the AL.

A stadium in Scottsdale would be an absolutely ****ing joke, for several reasons.

The Diamondbacks are trying to pull a fast one on Maricopa County; even if they succeed, I highly doubt their new stadium goes into Scottsdale.

That's the rumor- on some tribal land near their spring training site, IIRC.

There's nothing wrong with Bank One Ballpark.

Why do the DBacks need a new one?

I want to see the Expos comeback. Expos-Nationals rivalry gonna be sick.

So are Braves gonna start new trend of only using stadiums for 20 years then bye bye?

Texas is getting a new park as well. Now Arizona? Are Mariners gonna get rid of Safeco then in 5 years Giants gonna say bye bye to Pac Bell? Rockies too? This is absurd.

They don’t. But Maricopa County is low on funds; the Diamondbacks claim they’re late on some contractual maintenance to Chase; and the team is trying to use that confluence of events to grift into a new stadium.

Yeah. there is no room in Scottsdale for a stadium, no way it ends up there. He's talking about Salt River area east of 101, which could make sense as a new location.

I personally think Chase is already ideally situated: centrally located amongst the barely manageable sprawl of the metro, and just off the 10 but also accessible via surface streets like 7th; in a downtown that’s rapidly becoming a place to visit, as opposed to avoid; conveniently connected to the light rail, which everyone knows needs further expansion (and which would in turn alleviate traffic congestion after games).

Pillaging more Native land to export the Diamondbacks to some outlet mall hell, à la the Cardinals, is a terrible and utterly unnecessary idea—as is giving the team a dime of taxpayer money or tax-breaks to do it.

The D-Backs would probably draw better in this rumored new stadium. These owners have armies of guys crunching numbers, making models, etc. to determine that.

So I don't agree that it's a terrible idea if they determine the move is the right thing to do.

Rather than go into Mexico, a team should be put in San Antonio. Would love Montreal to return if they go retro with uniforms.

Montreal and Portland are the apparent front runners.

I generally type "MLB expansion" and "MLB Charlotte" and "MLB Portland" into Twitter and search.

There was a really good Stark article about it a few weeks ago in The Athletic.

I'd want them to bring back the retro hat like I have. It's gorgeous.

Giants fans would absolutely riot if they moved out of that beautiful park. I go to AT&T all the time and it’s an absolute baseball treasure.

I like Pac Bell. And I hope Baltimore doesn't replace Camden Yards either. Two "newer" but beautiful retro stadiums.
