We could at least have gotten a young and useless player that wouldn't take up a 40 man spot. It really seeems like AA has some strange affinity for Culberson.

AA is right to like having a back-up at short that is a plus defender at short and probably other positions too. Plus before today he had been hitting a lot better.

At the time Camargo was the guy at 3B. Culberson was acquired to back up SS/3B.
They couldn't afford anything else, and they were forced to pick Flaherty off the scrap heap.
Culberson isn't blocking anyone, the Braves didn't lose anyone to the R5 draft, so his presence is inconsequential.
