Can we/should we allow Hamels to get away?

Rumor mill has the Mariners talking to the Rangers about Cole Hamels, who owned the Braves during his Phllly days. He's still in his prime, he's healthy and he's available.

And, oh by the way, we have a SURPLUS of young pitching. This is a trigger that must be pulled because there's a good chance the Braves will have to face him somewhere along the way if they don't.

Cole hamels, he of the 5.22 FIP and 4.12 xFIP, is still in his prime at the age of 34?

    I'd much rather see Allard.

Trade Allard for Hamels and everyone wins.

Would cost about $11M for the rest of the year AND he wants his $20M 2019 option picked up. Don't see it.

    Would rather go for Eovaldi

Hopefully no one missed Jim Bowden's trade idea where we send Touki Toussaint, Cristian Pache, Bryse Wilson and a player to be named later to the Rangers for Cole Hamels and Keone Kela.

Got a good laugh out of that one.

Hamels is a good pitcher still.

Not a star at all but it we could convince Texas to swap Hamels for Julio, that could be a huge net win for us. Give them a projectable fringe arm or 2. Or a safe but not great arm. I would want Hamels in the post season. A lefty who can still throw 92 who before going to Texas had one of the best changeups in the game. If we had a competent pitching coach he could even have a Verlanderesque rebound for us.

I could live with Hamels for Julio with some equalization of money. Have some doubts this is the kind of return the Rangers would settle for.

We'd have to include someone else. Especially if we want a little bit of financial kickback. But that someoen could be like Huascar Ynoa, someone with some upside that we can afford to let go, or Wes Parsons, Someone who would be in the majors for a team with less pitching prospects.

Why in the world would Texas be interested in flipping Hamels for Teheran? There is no equalization scenario where that makes sense for them.

They will be able to find some other team willing to give them a mediocre prospect straight up for Hamels, and won't have to take on another team's castoff.

Money. They wouldn't ahve to kick in anywhere near as much. And if they can flip Julio it's a huge win for them.

OK....then why not just tell the Braves to flip Teheran themselves? Why take on that risk?

Let's call that scenario "extremely unlikely".

The infinitely more likely scenario is the Rangers do what is always done, and flip Hamels plus some cash for the best prospect they can get.

I just don't get the trade ideas on here sometimes. Hamels is 34, is not in his prime, has a 5.22 FIP, and has a pretty hefty contract that we likely couldn't afford without eating Texas eating some money. Tell me again why it is imperative we get this guy? Because we might have to face him in the playoffs or something? Maybe I'm dumb, but a 5.22 FIP pitcher who hasn't had a sub 3.5 ERA in 3 years doesn't exactly scare the pants off me.

I still maintain that trading from our surplus of pitching for a single pitcher is a bad idea and would be a mark of contempt for the rebuild. But if we are going to do it, give me someone better than a 34 year old Hamels.

    It's not reasonable.

The M's are connected to Hamels because they have a horrid farm system, and an overpriced mediocre pitcher is all they can afford via trade.

The Braves are in the exact opposite position.

Addressing the "there's a good chance the Braves will have to face him somewhere along the way" comment...

    Good!

The Braves currently lead all of MLB in wOBA vs LHP with a .350 mark.

I hope the Braves get to face him 5 times this season, and then 1-2 more times in the playoffs.
