    Soroka

Have we heard anything more than “shoulder soreness”? Also, not expected back until Sept.??

    I’m a little worried. Ok....I’m a LOT worried.

just the typical GM speak to not set off any alarms. but yes anytime a pitcher is moved to the 60 day DL gives me a reason to be concerned.

I feel like they already know something we don’t. Not sure why they would hide it though if so.

    My take

Sore shoulder. Put on 10 day dl. Few weeks later. Is soroka ready. Not sure let’s try him. Oh it still hurts. Shut him down.

I am sure he has seen specialist. If something was wrong he would have had surgery. This is just them being extra careful they don’t tear something.

He was moved to the 60 day a while ago and word around the block was August-mid August at best until the recent word being September.

Honestly I'm mildly concerned. They say it's just shoulder inflammation, confirmed by MRI but I remember the song and dance we saw with Mike Minor a few years back. They ended up finding something that needed fixing eventually in his shoulder.
Aggression with prospects is fine, but being stupid is not. There should be a way to find a happy medium between a Pirates like idea of being overly cautious with prospects and going stupidly fast with prospects.

Shoulders are the worst possible injury area for a pitcher.

It doubly sucks with Soroka because a large portion of his value was tied into how "safe" he was. That portion of his value has all but evaporated.

I think I would just shut him down this year. Maybe make a start or two at the end of the year, just to see where he is.

You are right ....shoulders friggin suck and it’s not a good sign that he is having this problem at 20 years old.

you should definitely be concerned that an odd spike in velocity suddenly went away and was followed up by recurring shoulder pain.

You might take some comfort if you believe the GM's explanation that they wanted to go very easy with him and give him an extended period to rest. If you buy that, then the 60 day DL shouldn't both you a whole lot.

But something like is a decent reason why trading pitching prospects, even for established pitchers, should not be inconceivable.

Soroka might well have hurt himself trying to put extra juice on the ball to get himself called up. Or not.

I wouldn't have traded him, but if he goes under the knife this fall I might well wish he had been.

The only bright side is that it he doesn't have surgery then he should be fine. But shoulder surgeries are a death knell to pitchers.

Because older pitchers are less likely to get hurt?

I'd love to see your data on this.

Because established good pitchers are likely to be better than prospects.
