i understand that we can't completely separate our own actions from what we expect from Putin

but we should not sweep under the carpet what the Russians did...there is a compelling public interest to having a thorough investigation...i want to know the facts...all of them...i understand a full airing will prove embarrassing to some, but that's not a good reason not to investigate this thing to the fullest extent possible

speaking of sweeping under the rug.

Our longterm goal with Russia is to isolate them and force regime change by economic domination. Excuse Putin for fighting back. Putin is more popular in Russia than Trump or Hillary are here so I dont think its fair ro considee him illegitimate.

but for those who put priority on legal niceties in this particular circumstance, i was observing he had the option of legal recourse...he chose to stay in the desert with his camels

So dictator Obama decides an American is guilty and kills him. You applaud.

And then you tell me how terrible Putin is.

    LOL

Couldn't have put it any better except for the term "dictator Obama." But I understand the uses of political rhetoric.

Good thing Obama didn't decide you were a threat when you were getting you treason intelligence from the Germans.

Your hypocrisy is truly astounding here. Just another neocon. Carry on

I’m against extrajudicial killings in general and American drone policy in particular, but trying to draw an equivalence between a battlefield killing (albeit, yes, an extrajudicial one) and murdering a political opponent or a journalist is a stretch. Maybe both are problematic, but isn’t there a question of degrees here?

Both are reprehensible... And any endorsement of killing an American citizen without due process is worse than a dictator killing someone abroad... We're supposed to be better than that.

But we expect Putin to behave when we refuse to.

I for one would not want to risk the life of a member of the armed forces so that al Awlaki could enjoy the niceties of due process...I can only say bravo and well done to those who took him out...of course if he was willing to come here and take his chances with our legal system that would have been his right and it would have been respected...

and as for the extra judicial argument...i believe the constitution gives the President the power to wage war...and taking out al Awlaki comfortably fits within that ambit...not that i spend much time concerning myself with that particular aspect of the matter

There were Americans born in this country who fought for Nazi Germany. No special care was taken to ensure due process for them. This whole concern for American born people who choose to fight for our enemies is rather precious.

Well, that’s why I’m saying there’s a difference in degree. I’m not particularly troubled—beyond the sense that a violent death is regrettable—by killing someone actively engaged in violent action against the US while overseas, when capture is not an option. Sure, it leads to caveats about whether the legal authority is overpermissive, or whether the policy itself is counterproductive, but those are separate questions. I mostly just object to the facile comparison between that and having a political dissident or a journalist shot in the street. I don’t entirely trust the legal machinery, but it’s a far cry from a head of state just dialing up a mafia hit on someone he doesn’t like.
