    From a Phillies Fan

He notes that the Braves are 17 over .500 against the Marlins and Mets but 1 game under .500 against everyone else. Given that the Braves are done with the Fish and only have three more against New York, he likes the Phillies chances.

I'm curious on the board's opinions as to how significant do you think this is and to what extent do you think it will determine who eventually wins the division, goes to the playoffs, etc?

I haven't seen any studies but I doubt records and data against specific teams have any predictive power when added to aggregate data including generic strength of schedule measures.

Tell him the Phillies have a +4 run differential and are essentially a .500 team

Tell him that even if the Braves don't win another game and the Phillies win the World Series, he will still have the shame of being a Phillies fan.

Beating bad teams is something winning teams do. Phillies are .500 vs. Marlins and Mets, I'd be much more worried about that than what the Braves have done.

The Phillies have two position players above 2 WAR. They are tied with the team lead at 2.3. Johan Camargo, who is fifth on our team, would have a comfortable lead as the Phillies 3rd best position player.

Acuna, with 2.8 would be the position player leader for the Phillies. So would Markakis at 3, Ozzie at 3.2, and Freeman at 5.

Nola is really, really good. Nobody else has been on that team.

With two head to head series left if we can get to +5 on them it should be over. If we can get to + 7 it is over.

If the Braves played only .500 ball from here on out, the Philthies would have to go 19-13 just to tie. In their last 16 games they are 6-10, during which they've only played 1 above .500 ball club (they split a 2 game series with Boston).

The Philthies are a .500 ball club that had nice run thanks to a rotation that was mostly pitching over its head. But they are 1 game below .500 since the AS Break. Call me skeptical of them going 19-13 the rest of the way while we play only .500 ball.

We're beating the teams we are supposed to beat, how is this anything less than the right thing to do?

The bottom line is simply this:

Around here we leave milk and cookies for Santa (and at my house some seriously spiked eggnog).

In that cesspool of humanity, they throw snowballs at poor old Santa (and batteries at Andruw Jones).

The bottom line is that nothing has been decided yet, and it’s still close enough with enough games left that anything can happen. Still, I’m liking the Braves chances right now, and if I were a betting man with no fear of jinxing them, I’d place my money there.

    2 things.

    1. The santa thing happened like 50 years ago. It's obscenely stupid to bring it up. It would be like talking about how the city of Atlanta arrested Dr. Martin Luther King for sitting at a lunch counter. It's asinine to bring up in any discussion about ****ty Philly fans.

    2. They threw batteries at JD Drew, not Andruw Jones. I know, I was at that game, it was ugly as ****. I was 2 sections over from the people throwing the batteries.

I'm a Sixers and Flyers fan and am from and live in Philly...they complain (endlessly) about their reputation but they deserve it in a lot of ways. they claim they're "passionate"; oftentimes, they're simply obnoxious and classless.
even this past season for the flyers, they started chucking beers on the ice at the end of a series. and 2 years ago threw bracelets that were given out pre-game onto the ice.
i've seen too much and have been to too many other places where i haven't seen similar things to say they're just normal fans and there are a few problem fans like anywhere else. IMO they're notably worse.

Nice stat from John Kincade’s twitter

    NL East Race 5 Weeks To Play;
@Braves 9 games home, 7 games road, 10 games home, 6 games road
@Phillies 6 games home, 6 games road, 6 games home, 11 games road, 3 games home
With Phillies (29-38) on road that 11 game road trip looks like a potential killer

They deserve a bad rep, but are hardly the only one. I mean unlike White Sox fans the Phillies fans never charged the field to attack an opponent's coach. Neither did Phillies fans beat a rival fan within inches of his life like the Dodgers. Looking to Braves own dark history a braves fan once assaulted a Padres player. Never did Philly have something as infamous as Disco Demolition Night, Phillies Fans never Bartman'd anyone.

Reality is that most fanbases who are passionate have large ****ty sectors because lots of people use the blanket of numbers to hide their ****tiness.
