The Great Home Run Race: 20 Years Later

Saturday marked the 20 year anniversary of Mark McGwire breaking Roger Maris’ single season home run record. Like many of you, I’m sure, I was absolutely caught up in the whole McGwire and Sammy Sosa show that season. With baseball still trying to get back from the strike, it breathed life back into the game. Of course, since then, the perception of both have changed. McGwire has admitted to being on PEDs and Sosa is widely believed to have done the same.

I’m curious with you all, knowing what we know now, do you still hold the home run race of 98 in the same regard or not?

we all know Hank Aaron is the true home run king and Roger Maris the single season record holder.

No. It has become just a blip in history with an * next to it.

    This.

MLB knew what was going on long before it became and "issue." Hell, McGuire had andro in his locker in front of reporters.

I have laughed at the "shocked" attitude of Selig and others once this became a political issue.

But opposite when the congress got involved and the tax exemption of MLB was in question -

Selig and Owners: "This is the end of a beautiful friendship."

Those guys ran like cockroaches when the lights came on.

I agree with this. But the home run race also rekindled an interest in baseball that I had lost after the strike, so I suppose I am a bit of a hypocrite on the matter. Now I look at that race like the slam dunk competition in the NBA; it isn't basketball, but it is entertaining.
