Grand Jury Looking Into MLB Practices in Latin America, Braves Involved

Jeff Passan over at Yahoo!?*$& is reporting that a federal grand jury is looking into MLB teams' international dealings. Right now, the focus seems to be on Hector Olivera, and unnamed former Braves official (already speculation this is Coppy) has been subpoenaed.

I have a feeling this could get very very ugly.

This is about the time last year when we found out we were under investigation.

I gotta look back at that trade in retrospect but if Coppy somehow managed to also funnel money through his trade for Olivera to the international free agents, that's absolutely amazing. This would be the kind of stuff in which I would have loved to have been seated on a jury for (I would have not said a thing about any fandom).

Edit: It could very well be the case. This one might get ugly in court.

Aggression with prospects is fine, but being stupid is not. There should be a way to find a happy medium between a Pirates like idea of being overly cautious with prospects and going stupidly fast with prospects.

I don't see how it could get any uglier for us when we've already been punished for the former regime.

Olivera was not involved in last years punishment. So if we, or a "former employee" are being mentioned in this, could that lead to additional penalties for us? It is possible

We didn’t sign HO. Wouldn’t this scare the dodgers more.

Maybe they will declare everyone involved in that trade a free agent.

I believe so. Our shenanigans started with the Toscano signing. So there is a Cuban angle that involves us, but I believe we have already been punished for that.

Yeah, wake me up when something of consequence actually happens. Remember the huge college basketball sting by the FBI last season? Yeah, nothing has happened

If that actually happened it would go a long way in explaining how awful that trade was.

Light hitting third basemen with bad defense don't grow on trees. Worth the risk.

Since the Braves didn’t sign HO I don’t see how Braves could be penalized. Sounds like the Dodgers should be worried.
Does this mean we will get Wood and Peraza back?
Didn’t the pursuit of HO start under Wren?

    Beat me to it.

I’m sure we would have an employee subpoenad but wouldn’t most teams to at least testify to their practices?

Only angle I can imagine—and it seems a real stretch—is that Olivera was brought into the organization to somehow aid or implement shenanigans. Again: a real stretch.

Weren't the Braves penalized enough by having Olivera on the roster?

Without Olivera we would have never traded for Kemp. Then Kemp was traded for Culberson. So the Wood for Olivera trade was just and elaborate chess game hatched by Coppy in order to ultimately steal Culberson away from the Dodgers in 2018 when we needed him.
