K and BB rates for our Pitchers

Strikeout and walk rates for our pitchers in September.

    Folty 7.8 2.8
    Sanchez 9.3 2.9
    Teheran 8.6 5.2
    Gausman 7.2 3.6
    Newcomb 10.4 5.7

    Toussaint 11.0 7.4
    Sobotka 11.6 6.4
    Brach 7.0 1.7
    Jackson 7.7 7.7
    Carle 2.1 4.2
    Viz 9.5 4.8
    Winkler 3.9 11.6
    Wilson 4.5 13.5
    Wright 7.5 9.0

    Freeman 12.2 5.4
    Fried 14.4 5.4
    Minter 9.6 4.8
    Venters 6.5 6.5
    Biddle 7.7 9.6

A number of them have not looked good lately and some careful sifting is required in choosing the roster for the next series.

Sample sizes are very small for some of these guys, so let me add the August data.

    Folty 9.5 2.3
    Sanchez 9.4 2.6
    Gausman 6.2 2.0
    Teheran 8.3 2.9
    Newcomb 10.0 4.3

    Touki 6.0 3.0
    Winkler 10.2 2.2
    Brach 10.2 5.1
    Jackson 7.8 2.8
    Sobotka 14.7 4.9
    Carle 4.5 18.0

    Venters 7.0 2.6
    Biddle 11.9 1.3
    Freeman 13.5 2.3
    Minter 9.3 1.9
    Fried 12.0 3.0

The August numbers were a lot better generally. Did some of the guys hit a wall in September? Or should we give more weight to their larger body of work than to the September numbers?

Comments on individual pitchers (incorporating what their velocity charts show).

Carle: Strikeout rate has been going down. His velocity is down and has not really come back even after the stint on the DL.

Winkler: Very good August. Lost it in September. Velocity trending down.

Biddle: Very good August. Lost the strike zone in September. Velocity trending up.

Freeman: No clear trend in velocity.

Minter: Velocity trending down. Lost release point after back sprain in August.

    Venters: Velocity trending down.

    Brach: Velocity trending down.

Viz: Velocity inconsistent since return to DL and not all the way back to pre-DL level.

Looking at the starters, velocity has held up well for Folty, Gausman and Sanchez. It has bounced back for Teheran in his last 3 starts. Also bounced back for Newcomb his last few starts.

I feel good about the starters. Relievers represent some tough choices. Fatigue affects different players differently. Some lose command, others lose some zip off their fastball.

Looking at the numbers (and watching most of the games) has persuaded me Carle should probably be left off. Fried and Touki have made good cases for themselves. Sobotka too.

I'm a bit torn on Biddle and Winkler. They have been poor in September, but were both very good in August. I think Vincent has bounced back, but still a guy with control issues. Venters has lost the strike zone a bit the past few games, but I would want him on the roster.

Some tough choices. Biddle vs Fried. Winkler or Vincent. Can't take them all.

I'm a little puzzled by Bowman saying Brach is on the bubble. I'd be surprised if he wasn't selected.
