Oddly enough though only $25 mil/year average.

With opt outs I'd think it would be front loaded but who knows. 13 years is a long time.

hard not to be disappointed that the Braves not only didn't improve in the OF, but took a step back.
please don't tell me about value either

Imo Machado and Harper are about the same player in terms of value. So Machado gets 300M for 10 years. Harper gets 300M for 10 years, plus an extra 30M for his ages 36-38 seasons. Seems about right. I think both got paid the going market rate of somewhere between 8M to 9M per expected win.

Neither is a great deal for the clubs concerned. But neither is a disaster.

All of the above is ex ante.

There are other posters around here who specialize in ex post and they will get to practice their specialty in a few years with respect to those two contracts.

Yup. Any excuses are trash. Atlanta screwed this up big time. I like AA, but he looks like a dumbass right now.

Harper is all about power. Not very good defensively. Not good in the club house. Doesn’t hit for average. Walks a lot because of the power. Once the power goes down in about five years...so will the walks. The Phillies could be looking at eight years of a bad player making $25 mil a year.

Well, I really thought there was another move coming after the Nick signing (like JTR).

I think we really have to hope that prospects and young guys (like Dansby and Ozzie)...really out perform predictions now.

Most definitely. They have to do it. I can understand saving money but AA seriously might cost us a year of contention. Insane. MAKE THE DAMN TRADES AND GET BETTER.

McCutchen, Segura, Harper, Hoskins, Realmuto, Herrera, Franco and Hernandez is going to be tough to beat, man.

I don't think it's about "saving money." there just isn't any available.
also herrera and franco aren't particularly good. hernandez is ok

Hoping for many players and prospects to all outperform their projections is a moronic and risky proposition. AA screwed the pooch this offseason. End of discussion. Might as well use the 23 mil invested in Donaldson to pay down the debt further. At least then we’d be one step closer to being done with the debt and actually using the money to invest in the team later.

They add four studs to their everyday lineup and we add an oft injured Donaldson, an aging and declining McCann and Markakis. Thanks, AA. You’ve done a bang up job this offseason.

Then trade some of our young guys. I know this is more in-the-moment than anything, but there's no excuse for AA not doing anything. You have to be smart. Even a trade for Realmuto likely makes us NL East favorites. We did almost nothing to make our team better but hope and pray that the young guys improve.

Marlins reportedly wanted Anderson, Pache/Riley and Wilson/Wright/Touki, per Heyman. I get wanting to make moves but that would be an all-time bad move.
