Knowing what we know about the Ms quotes for a Haniger return, the package from the Braves almost certainly starts with one of Pache/Riley plus one of Soroka/Wright/Anderson (or maybe Touki or Newk). That duo represents about $80M in value, and then random filler would be sprinkled in to complete the package.

Is that type of package for 4 years of Haniger (a young 3 win player) preferable to $50M in cash for 3 years of Cutch (an aging 3 win player)? The only way it is preferable is if the Braves don't have $50M to give Cutch. The only way the Braves don't have $50M to give Cutch is if they are insistent on adding a SP, or if the opening day payroll is $120M and they've already spent $107M.

I still think the most likely scenario is the Braves getting a Gray/Frazier package from the Yankees in exchange for young pitching that the Yankees will somehow turn into studs. Gohara for Gray/Frazier. If I had to bet on 1 specific scenario, that's where I'd place my money.

I just don't see a scenario where they were so excited about Donaldson they spazzed into making him their only significant acquisition at the expense of their most obvious glaring hole.

I think they'll make some other moves and we'll see. It's entirely possible though, that they want to play this offseason exclusively in short range commitments in FA.

I still think the pass on McCutcheon was the 20m obligation in 2021. I don't think they want to risk 15% of their payroll on an aging player in decline at possibly a peak moment for their young players.

I don't know for sure, but it really doesn't make sense to splurge on Donaldson and stopgap LF and C and SP and the pen. I think the end game looks better than that.

Either accept bc it's the best offer you have, or move on if it's not enough. We're not adding to the package anymore so it should be pretty cut and dry. We shouldn't be the ones held hostage by them. There are plenty of other free agent catchers available that won't cost prospect capital.

The Braves have their catching tandem in place. If they make a Realmuto deal great, but it's not like they have to have him to fill out the roster.

Per Craig Mish: "Sources indicate Braves appear willing to part with top prospect Austin Riley for Realmuto but I do not believe that trade would also include the previous names I mentioned (Soroka/Newcomb). Marlins have held firm on multiple players for J.T."

The Braves must really want Realmuto to still be in on him. I think the Mets are fixing to bow out and go get Maldonado.

Braves could use JTR but he's not a must have.

A corner outfielder is a much bigger need. If they get JT cool, but a McCann/Flowers duo isnt the worst for 1 year.

    Pass on the Gray/Frazier idea.
I tend to agree, but it sounds like the Braves are intent on getting another SP, and I can't see them getting the desired value on the FA market. For example, they probably aren't getting Happ for 2 years, and the best value play for an average or better SP is probably Gray. Once they are working on a Gray deal, it will make sense to expand it to Frazier.

Agreed. Besides, I don't see the point in having 3 catchers for a full season on the bench. You would have to trade Flowers at that point.

I'd make McCann the personal catcher for Folty.

Though an interesting aspect of this deal would be if they attach Flowers/Teheran in a salary dump or salary swap trade for a LFer

If we do trade for Realmuto do we make them take Flowers back or do we trade him in a separate deal?

I don't think we trade or get rid of either unless it's a must in the deal. I can see either become a bench bat, which would be a great way to strengthen it.

I've long suspected AA had a boner for Donaldson, and his quotes about JD being the key to the off season backs that up.

I think JD was priority #1 all along, and signing Mac was a direct result of that. The quotes lumping Cutch, Markakis, and Cargo together as 1-2 year options tells me AA misread the cOF FA market a bit when making the overall off season plan. The fact they are probably one of the teams with a 2 year offer out to Happ tells me they misread the FA SP market a bit as well.

If they thought they could get Cutch on a 1-2 year deal, and budgeted accordingly, then it is entirely possible the FA they sign for LF will be on a 1-2 year deal..and he will be a very underwhelming addition.

They have probably circled the wagons a bit after the Cutch signing went down to regroup, which is why we are seeing the comments about patience now. They have to decide to either pony up prospect capital, or wait for a value FA to fall in their laps later in the off season. For a team trying to build off an NL East title, taking the chance on such a value FA addition presenting itself seems like a bad gamble to take...and ultimately end up with Cargo in LF.

    Why not just cut McCann?

As Ensheff has suggested numerous times, the Braves are named by Jon Heyman as in on Sonny Gray, along with the Reds, Padres, and Mariners.

There are indications that the Marlins do want a veteran presence at Catcher with their young staff. Holaday/Wallach certainly would be in that mix & are great receivers but potentially as a backup to either a player via trade or FA acquisition.

This would make sense....Tyler Flowers/Austin Riley/ prospect for JTR.

So there's how we make this trade. Flowers would almost certainly be included with Riley and whatever else.

All this Braves talk today tells me that we aren't getting anything done today

But i'd love to leave the meetings having JTR on our side.

No idea, but I doubt it's worth the prospect resource for us.
