The last time we made a deal like this that we didn't ultimately regret it was McGriff in '93. So we added Mac (retirement tour), Nick (should have moved on), and Donaldson (injury history gamble) for $31M you telling me we could not have had Harper or Manny for that and then traded them in the back half of the deal? Think SuperGM has screwed up so far.
This line of reasoning is why most fans never understand roster construction, and shouldn't even bother discussing it.

Comparing 1 year of $31M for 3 players to the first year of a huge deal for a player like Harper or Machado as if they are at all similar is exceedingly ignorant.

The "trade them at the back half of the deal" comment is just icing on the cake...as if any of the current failed albatross contracts can simply be moved by the teams they are crippling. Why don't the Angels just move Pujols? Or the Tigers just move Cabrera?

It's mind boggling that folks still compare 1 year deals to 8+ year deals as if the decade long term of the contract means nothing.

So you mean they didn’t just bank on prospects automatically becoming stars?

If Cincy puts Senzel or Trammel in thats probably better than anything we do. Greene is similar to Anderson. Plus whatever else.

My guess is AA offered Riley, Wilson and a couple lower prospects.

There's also been some speculation that Cincy could get JTR and flip him to us for Inciarte.. which would make some sense if we could get Joc and Miami is in fact being dumb and insisting us to pay a ton more just because we are in the east

Not saying I don't believe you, but I was under the impression Riley was more or less a given in a JTR trade, and the hang up was on which arm accompanied him.

That isn't the case it seems?

I’m not a dick so I believe you. You’ve been around the boards for awhile so you have merit.

That was my impression too until what I heard today. Apparently we don’t want to offer either of those two, hence the Wright and Pache offer. Sounded more likely we would cave on Anderson than Riley.

That does make sense. If AA talked with Cincy and said ok this is what we will give you for JTR if you can get him and it makes sense for us and them then why not?

I doubt Jeter will want him in Atlanta period so I don’t see a 3 team trade if he don’t wanna deal him straight up here. What’s the rule on how long a player has to stay with the team before being traded again?

    Hmmmm....

    This actually makes sense!

    Marlins get:
    Jonathan India - 3B
    Bryce Wilson - SP
    Tucker Barnhart - C

    Reds get:
    Ender Inciarte - CF
    Tyler Flowers - C
    Darren O'Day - RP

    Braves get:
    J.T. Realmuto - C
    Yasiel Puig - OF
