It seems like we are trying to get the best deal instead of the best player. That concerns me with our division. If you have 3 90 win takent teams we might beat each other up and out of the playoffs. We might not be a 90 win team with cargo and comargo in of.
Also seems like they are balking at going more than two years.
Is that bc they anticipate extensions then? It’s not like we have position prospects banging down the door.
It’s this simple.
AA has the mindset for us to compete long term. If there is a trade or free agent that does that...he will move. He will NOT give away major future assets for a one year shot.
Yes, the Phils and Mets will blow their farms and payrolls to the max this year. Next year, they will not have payroll flexibility or the farm to do much of anything and the older players like Cutch...will be older and declining. I like Cutch, and maybe he is worth that. In the end, we don’t have the payroll to pay a guy big money for two declining years.
I like what AA is doing/not doing. As a fan, I absolutely want us to go for it...all in. I am glad AA is more level headed. Because of this, the Nats, Mets and Phillies “could” on paper ALL be better than us next year. In years after though, when they sit with aging players making big money that they can’t trade and a average to bad farm...we will be slowly getting stronger.
If AA does it right, we could have at least “some” big money to spend next year also.
How many times have you seen the Yankees sit back and say “We aren’t interested”, only to swoop in the last second and get the player and the great deal. This is how we operate now. No more knee jerk GM moves. Take it if it’s there, leave it if it’s not.
I’m glad to sit back and just see what happens after the smoke clears. So far....I’m really happy with AA. He’s had plenty of time to blow the farm and payroll to put his “mark” on the team, but he just keeps laying in the bushes waiting to pounce. Smart man.
I’m impressed with AA so far. No panic. On another note and not to hijack, but did y’all feel the earthquake? Woke me up at 4:15.
Heyman- To this point, the mets have seemed to be the most aggressive team on realmuto. The braves and yankees are in (though the yankees might just be to flip him elsewhere). The phillies, astros, padres and dodgers are in the next tier.
Mets are to lose a bit of confidence in realmuto talks, and are starting to think about the value of acquiring a defensive catcher — they met on Maldonado Tuesday — and bulking up the bullpen instead.

I like the idea of keeping the window open longer and being catious. But I also don’t want another run of 10 playoff appearances but not really have a good enough team to win it all. I think we need to gamble a bit. We have enough chips and money to make a good gamble on a potentially good player.

Seriously though, I don't wanna go all in this season. I wanna give our young guys another year to progress.
Based on aa comments and my daughter waking me up at 3 am....grumpy.
I get that aa is going to get the value approach. It’s risky. I feel like I’d rather overpay for a 3-4 war guy then get a deal on a 2 win guy.
I also get that the versatility of the team opens a million options that complicate things. You could move Albies or comargo to ss. Acuna to any of spot. We like 7 pitchers who could get you 1-2 war next year and controlled for years.
What worries me (and it probably shouldn’t) is we have added JD and Mac for totaling 25 million, that’s a lot of our money we had to spend and we spent it on 2 guys who have been injured a lot. I love Donaldson and he might be my favorite player but if he goes down for most of the year we are in trouble if we don’t get a legit hitting outfielder. It seems like AA is wanting to low ball everybody and keep it at 2 year deals. If that is the case then we will see Markakis back in RF next year and that is a huge fail.
