I wasn't answering what you would do. I was answering what I thought the Fish will do.

If you want my opinion on what the Fish should do:

Trade JTR for 3-4 high end guys who are in A ball. From LA something like: Gavin Lux (A-AA), Jeter Downs, Jeren Kendall (A+) and Diego Cartaya (Rok)

Everyone would say that is a horrible value for JTR. But, the Fish don't need ML ready guys. They need guys with high end talent who could be ML ready in 3-4 years. Getting Verdugo or Ruiz or Riley really doesn't help them since by the time they could reasonably be expected to be good again, those guys would be a year or two away from FA.

i think the only problem with that is the extreme uncertainty. lux is looking more and more solid, but the rest of the guys, due to being so young, carry so much risk. of course riley and verdugo carry risk, but way less. anderson, riley, wright, etc have far less risk but still lots of upside.

True but it comes with the territory of a rebuild. Look at Brinson. He's playing horribly at the ML level, was rushed, and even if he continues to develop, will be out of club control by the time they can reasonably expect to have rebuilt given their finances.

The Marlins feel they totally screwed up the Yelich and Stanton deals are are trying to make up for all of them in this 1 deal so they won’t settle. They’ll keep him till they get overpaid or just take the pick. They’ve already totally botched this deal too.

I agree they've botched the deal.

But they WILL trade him. It may be in-season. But he's gone.

yeah, i agree. i totally see your point, and i don't even disagree. you just better be really good at identifying players that low. and even if you are, they can easily flame out anyway, and you may never get any kind of value. maybe with brinson, if he progresses, they can have another fun standoff for 2 years before making a trade.
as for brinson this season specifically, it was dumb not to start him in the minors. they had nothing to gain and he wasn't clearly ready. just bad asset management.

I don't consider McCann and Markakis major moves

The Fish have played their hand badly. Now they will want a package that saves face and the Dodgers can give it to them. When the Dodgers signed Pollock it was a clear signal that they are willing to trade Pederson. So, as I've said before, I think JTR goes to LA for Pederson, C Martin and a couple of useful but not high end minor league guys. The Fish will sell to both their fans that they got great value when in fact they got hosed as far as long term franchise building is concerned - just like they've done in all their other trades....
Doubtful... seems pretty clear the Dodgers have cooled

We've seen a pretty consistent pattern with the Marlins during this JTR saga...

Interested team contacts them, negotiations get hot and heavy, then the other team gets tired of dealing with the Marlins and rumors die. We've seen this exact series of events happen with the Braves, Dodgers, Padres and now the Reds.

There are only 2 possible reasons this can be happening over and over:

    1. The Marlins are completely incompetent, so much so that other teams can't even deal with them
    2. They are sitting on an acceptable offer they know they can fall back on, so they are waiting for a better offer

Given the Marlins were able to complete several significant trades last year, I have to conclude the answer is #2. It's likely the Marlins are sitting on a very strong standing offer from a team like the Braves, which is why there was no need to contact each other for months now. The Braves are more or less set at C now, so AA can afford to left that offer stand and wait for the Marlins to accept. The Astros could also be the team with the standing offer.

You don't see many teams trade for catchers mid-season, as it can be difficult to learn a whole pitching staff on the fly mid-season. That's another thing working against the Marlins here that I'm sure other teams are aware of.

Maybe when he finally passes Math 201 he will understand why his lineup construction was so awful.
