I do like the idea of picking up Eric Chavez.

Maybe a bench of Chavez, Laird, Pena, Reed Johnson and Schafer.

I'd rather raise our offer to Hudson than dish out the kind of multi-year deal it would take to get Garza or Santana.

Yeah, I wouldn't offer anything rich for those two guys. They are not the top of the rotation guys I feel the Braves need to look out. I see those two guys as middle of the rotation, maybe #2 at best. Braves already have those guys in Minor, Teheran, and Medlen (Assuming Kris is part of the team in 2014. I think he COULD be trade bait, but that is iffy). I still think the Braves should at least talk to the Rays about Price. Whether a deal can be done, is a completely different story.

    Nothing ground-breaking but worth posting.

Not that we NEED to make any huge moves.

Regards to Garza or Santana, it depends on the cost and if either come with draft pick stuff.

As far as free agents go, this is not the year for the Braves to get into that market. Once you get past Cano, Ellsbury, Choo, and McCann, the market is kind of "meh". The Braves can't afford Cano and there is either no place or too expensive in regards to Ellsbury and Choo. McCann is going to get a big contract offer from an A.L. team, likely Rangers or Yankees. Other than that, unless you get a bullpen guy, no need to get a free agent. The big thing is see if you can get an ace through a trade and see what the Braves can do about Uggla.

This also could be a year in which one of the youngsters gets a long term contract. Whether that be Freeman, Heyward, Simmons, or Kimbrel, it's time to lock up at least one or two of those guys.

It could get interesting next week.

In order to receive Draft-pick compensation, clubs must make a qualifying offer to any of its qualifying free agents by 5 p.m. ET, five days after the completion of the World Series. The player has until 5 p.m. ET on the seventh day after receiving the offer to accept, which this year is a one-year contract valued at $14.1 million.

While the Braves will almost definitely make a qualifying offer to McCann with the understanding he would likely not accept it, they would almost certainly not make the offer to Hudson, who would have plenty of reason to accept and as a result possibly double his potential salary for next season.
Hard to see them qualifying Hudson to get the compensatory pick, with the risk that he'd accept. That's a substantial raise from what he'd been making.

A qualifying offer for Hudson would not be crazy imo. It is a slight overpay but has the advantage of not committing the team to a multi-year deal.

No team is going to give up a draft pick to sign Tim Hudson for 2+ years.

That would be a good thing. Would make it easier for us to retain him.

I don't think we would have to offer 14 million to keep him. I think if we offer anywhere from 6-10 he will stay. He has plenty of money.

Ellsbury is going to get bank, he wants a LOT of money and he's 30.

    Choo's market should be interesting.

Love Cano, but his market is ridiculous.

But yeah, it's a meh market.

If we didnt get BJ, we might be in play for Choo, sigh.

Mainly agree on the bottom part, preferably one of Simba/FF/Heyward, hopefully 2/3.

Same on Huddy, he loves it with the Braves.

Im sure he'd stay if the offer is fair, on a 1-yr deal.

Here's a 25-man roster assuming Mac is gone, and Frank dumps Uggla.

    Gattis
    FF
    LaStella
    Simba
    CJ
    JUp
    BJ
    Heyward

    Terdo
    Laird
    Schafer
    Pena
    EJ/Reed/FA

    Minor
    Julio
    Medlen
    Beachy
    Hudson/Wood/Hale/FA

    Kimbrel
    Walden
    Carp
    Avilan
    Varvaro
    CMart
    FA

I saw on a different Braves board that FW said Venters will return, but not sure he'll be ready by Opening Day.

Same on EOF, and not sure on his market.

Ideally bring back both but probably not.

Why do these hypothetical rosters keep getting posted with basically the same team? Don't think that the whole winter is going to consist of only:

    1.) watching McCann walk
    2.) dumping Uggla
    3.) re-signing Hudson

If that were realistic, we might as well shut this forum down until ST, because there won't be anything to talk about.

Every year, no matter what, there is always significant roster turnover. Wren will sign somebody. He will make at least one trade. Some new faces will be in camp, and not just promotions from the minors.

Chavez is a great idea for a LHed bat off the bench. He handles RHers well, and could give CJ a day off vs especially tough RHers. He would also be the primary PHer off the bench and be the default DH vs the AL when they start a RHer. He is good enough to start for a while in case CJ or Freeman get hurt.

No need to have Schafer on the bench though. Reed can play CF, while Chavez and Pena would be better LHed bats off the bench. In that scenario I would rather see Terdo as the 25th guy.

I think we non tender Schafer at this point. He's proved he can't hit.

    How is that really crazy?

We have ONE spot on the starting lineup, offense to upgrade, 2B.

Maybe 1 spot in the rotation.

Bench could add a piece or two, same for the bullpen.

We dont really need to do a whole lot.

Sometimes the best moves are the ones you dont make.

One would think long time fans would be aware of this. Every year shows 6-10 new faces come out of ST.
