Yes, there is opening day roster turnover from one year to the next. But not all of that is the product of off-season activity. Carpenter, Wood and Beachy were not on the opening day roster this year but likely will be in 2014. Uggla will probably be gone and replaced by someone who was not there last year.

I do think there will be a couple more. Maybe Eric Chavez. Maybe Terdoslavich. Maybe Hale.

We will have some turnover but I think most would be shocked if someone outside of uggla is moved out of the every day players. We could have 2 new starting pitchers and I hope we have 2 new relievers. I also want the bench to get a major upgrade in the power area.

    Two bullpen pieces, meh.

    Kimbrel
    Carp
    Avilan
    Walden
    Varvaro
    Venters
    EOF?

Wood can be the second lefty until Venters and EOF come back. Gearrin shouldn't be forgotten. And then there are Hale, Obispo, Martin, Graham, Simmons, Jaime, Harper, Gilmartin, Thomas, Northcraft, Poveda, Lamm, Schlosser waiting in the wings. Our pitching depth is very strong.

we need an 8th inning guy. Carpenter proved he isn't an 8th inning guy and Walden is never going to stay healthy enough to be able to keep it.

Are Venters and EOF even going to be ready come opening day? Doubt it.

Wood needs to be in AAA starting just in case he is needed.

Yes we have depth but none of those guys can take over the 8th IMO.

Avilan can be an 8th inning guy easy IMO.

Bench could add a piece or two, same for the bullpen.

We dont really need to do a whole lot.

Sometimes the best moves are the ones you dont make.
A change at 2B, another SP with changes on the bench and possibly the bullpen is rather significant roster turnover. Like always. The roster not only changes between the end of the WS to ST, but always significantly throughout the season.

No need to use the straw man argument, because nobody used the word, big.

    Here, see for yourself:

Substantial differences, just in one year. It may be hard to fathom, but some of those pitchers, that you listed in the other post, will be traded, released or never make it.

Venters and EOF won't be ready until May or June. I think the plan will be for Wood to be the second lefty in the pen until those two return. Then send him to the AAA rotation to get his arm stretched out.

    Nothing ground-breaking but worth posting.

Not that we NEED to make any huge moves.

Regards to Garza or Santana, it depends on the cost and if either come with draft pick stuff.
Santana's arm is shot and Garza is a million-dollar-arm ten-cent-head guy. Pass. Go with what we've got. Let them mature and grow.

If Roger bolts--and it looks like he might--the last thing we need is a completely young rotation and bullpen.

Right. So Hudson. And a geezer like Ayala. Or OFlaherty.

Carpenter did prove a lot this year. NOT being an 8th inning guy is not one of them. He is a young guy who came into his own and had a great year. He will be better for the experience. I think he proved he may very well be an 8th inning guy.

That would be a tough blow if McDowell left. Especially after Dave Wallace left for Baltimore

so if we don't bring back a pitcher who is close to 40 and coming off a pretty bad injury to his push off leg

we need to go get a top of the rotation starter

    what a weird prerequisite

Only 3 weeks into our offseason and the first Wood pun has been thrown down.

For me it's simple, if we don't get someone like Price (I don't consider Scherzer there yet, Price has been doing it for much longer), I'd rather we just go with our young guns and see what happens.

I don't want to waste money on a Matt Garza type pitcher. We aren't the Red Sox or Dodgers or Yanks and can afford to overpay for someone like that.

From this link: The Braves are expected to keep their payroll just north of $95 million. The amount of money that will be available this offseason will be influenced by Uggla's potential departure and the specific salaries awarded to the club's arbitration class, which is impressive both in terms of quantity and quality.

But... but... DOB said we'd be getting $25 million to (not) spend....

Anyway, this sounds a lot more likely that us actually seeing something positive on the payroll front.
