Minor is a better pitcher than Bailey. The only thing Bailey has ever done is get lucky with 2 no-hitters, and yes no-hitters are lucky. See Philip Humber, Kent Mercker and every other average or below average pitcher that threw a no-hitter compared to guys like Greg Maddux (one of the 10 greatest pitchers ever) that never threw a no=hitter. if Bailey is going to get $100M for 6 years it's very, very, very doubtful that Minor would settle for less and even more doubtful that Wren would give him a deal over $100M. Name 1 deal that a pitcher got, that has been over $100M that hasn't ended in disaster? It's too early to tell on the Justin Verlander and King Felix deals. All the rest were utter disasters. Listening to Frank Wren speak yesterday and talking about how he value's long-term deals, it would have to be below $100M for Minor to get extended.
It's not the point that you were trying to make, but let me interject for a second on Merker's behalf. Evaluating the talent at the minor league level, there could easily have been top brass in the Braves org, who projected Mercker to be a top LH starter (we could mention Lilliquist, as well). In fact, both we picked higher and rose with a more hype. Ditto, no less than Hank Aaron said that Tommy Greene was the "best of them" in reference to the crop of young pitching, which included Glavine, Smoltz and Avery. In terms of "stuff," Mercker should've had a much better career. It's hard to remember the history, but was better than average or below average. Sometimes things just don't work out.
The Yankees will end up regretting the Sabathia deal. He has declined mightily the last year or two from his peak years and he's got 3 years left on his deal. Cain and King Felix are two deals that may end up working out just fine given how young they were the deals were signed and that they don't go too far into their 30s on them. Cain had a down year in 2013 by his standards but there's no reason to think he won't rebound this year. Lee did get over $100M from the Phillies and so far it's been a win for them, but he's still got 2 years left on it for his age 35 and 36 seasons. We'll see if he continues to pitch like a Cy Young winner these next 2 years.
You did a nice job naming off some deals that have worked out so far, but I can name some that ended up being disasterous, Mike Hampton, Denny Neagle, Johan Santana are 3 that just come to mind without me even having to think about it.
Looks like Homer is getting paid for those no hitters he hurled.
