I took a bullet train in Japan one time that went 200/mph
and was so quiet and smooth it was like sitting still. It was ****in
space-age awesome and nobody should be able to chant “USA! USA!”
    until we have better.
Let's see... train from LA to NYC at 200 MPH is a quick little 14 hour train ride... or about 3 times as long as a flight.

This is assuming it's a straight line. With no stops. And no hills/mountains.

And that's two cities in the US. Next I need to get to Minneapolis. And DC. And Miami. And Omaha, Nebraska.

This is gonna be one hell of a train system. We need to build this system without cars, machines, or oil because that would be bad. Better get to work.

Interested to see Amash take on this resolution and his counter offer.
Because if he is the leader you say he is he will have to show his cards.
I think you would be surprised how much philosophically they have in common
Anyone that understands legislative politics would know that this roll out is nothing more than a broad wish list.
    The start of a conversation

In another life I traveled to Leesburg, Va for baseball where we played in Fireman Park. A beautiful facility surrounded by brick walls. Later added a recreational center with roller skating and auditorium for civic events. It was built during the Depression with New Deal input. I forget the agency was responsible for over sight. It still stands being a money maker for the Leesburg community for over 75 years.
A few years ago we went to Hot Springs, Ga seeing FDR Museum. The exhibits we saw were jaw dropping. The magnitude of the New Deal, how innovative for its time, the partnership between labor and management that was required and the long term. Staying power of what was built and how solid it was.
Traveling around the country there are hundreds if not thousands of Firemens Parks. People living in the rural south everytime you turn on Fox News or turn on a light please thank FDR for TVA.
In 2019 TVA would be pilloried on reddit as Socialism

I find the deconstruction of the resolution by if a train leaves LA at 4 o'clock a smarmish question that misses the point.

The mocking of rebuilding every building too misses the point.

Justin Amash does not need to have a counter proposal to "let's send everyone to Mars"

The answer to communist proposals is no, not slightly less communist proposal

Agreed. The education system has successfully indoctrinated our country as designed.

For years you have laughed at the idea that leftist policies are socialism. Now youre outwardly calling for them.

I suspect you'll get it, and the system will need to crumble before we can get back to liberty

I got a good chuckle out of it. Impressive how it somehow managed to include all the golden oldies from the progressive left wing playlist. If you didn’t know guaranteeing a job with adequate family leave and paid vacations was crucial to our fight against climate change, well now you know!

You gotta admit... having guaranteed money for people "unwilling to work" is a nice little benefit.

That might have a few takers.

It gives me a bit of a chuckle that you’re addressing this comment to a guy whose worldview is as extreme as sturg’s. Like, how much wackier is a jobs guarantee than the idea that we should have no taxes and no social safety net?

This bill is a joke, julio. Please tell me you understand that.

It's not even in the ballpark of a serious proposition.

By the way I think it's pretty funny that AOC is flying back to NYC rather than taking the train.

Gosh, I’ve read the resolution—not a bill, btw—and I didn’t see the bit that you quoted anywhere. Could you point it out for me?

    From AOC's own website...

Now - I'm sure you're about to say "IT'S NOT IN THE RESOLUTION!!!"

And then I'd ask - then why did AOC summarize the resolution as such.

To be fair - the resolution is light on specifics. "Massive investments" and car charging stations "everywhere" will be tough to model out.

How those car charging stations will have enough energy to charge anything will be a discussion for another time, though

    To be fair:

Wonder what it means to be unwilling to work ?

Would it be when a techie's contract runs out and said techie can't find anything in the range he/she is accustomed.
Pretty sure some here have been in that boat.
I for one am willing to pitch in to help tide that person over

Would maybe be due to illness or other health related issues

Would it maybe be to family issues as in elderly parents or child care

Would maybe it would be lack of transportation . As in many rural families

    Would maybe it be ...
    ...................................

Instead of defaulting to the old (R) saw of the "free money" dog whistle there is in adult life extenuating circumstances.
I remember one time you being insulted when it was put forward that you have been blessed with advantages.
Many many people live without the advantages you and I seem to take for granted.

Instead of mocking the above sentence perhaps reflect on what it means rather than knee jerk respond

Let's step back a second and deconstruct the aim of high speed rail.
Of course anyone with half a brain would realize the proposal is not to supplant air travel.
Of course there is no train service to Hawaii ( you know that other country in the middle of the Pacific) or Puerto Rico ( " big water" )
    sheeeesh

I fly fairly often fron ATL to NY/Phila/Boston
When Amtrak was new and in repair I would take the train.
Now that train travel is almost equal in cost and far less efficient than before I fly.

I am sure you have ridden high speed rail in Europe -- correct?
Where one can travel from Marseilles to Paris in roughly 3 hours.
Since 9/11 try flying that distance in 3 hours

Sturg isn’t a member of Congress trying to shove through his entire worldview under the guise of climate change. If he wrote a resolution saying “we need to address the unsustainable rise in ocean levels and global temperatures.....by eliminating rent control and privatizing the post office,” then sure, he’d deserved to be mocked. That’s what makes her resolution laughable. AOC wanted to start a conversation on what she thinks is a dire crisis and her resolution turns out to be nothing more than a naive socialist wish list. I’m assuming this is one of the reasons Pelosi left her off that climate change committee.
