    Contracts

As I said last week the MLB off season is painfully slow. I think there were marquee names that still had not signed with a team in February last season if not later. The pace of the off season aside. Do you think the desire from big name players to get a 10 year deal is to blame right now? Not blaming either side in this either. I see both points from the player side as well as the team side. I don’t ever think we will see a hard cap in baseball, but what about implementing a term limit on a contract? There would not be a limit to how much you could make, but cap the length of a deal to say 5 years. On the surface it seems like a win-win for everyone involved. A player gets his payday and has a chance to get another one for possibly more money when the five years are up. The franchise doesn’t need to take the huge risk of a player falling off completely at the end of a long contract.

What do people think of this? Is there any chance something like this happens? I assume the players association would throw an absolute fit.

I don't think the players would go for a limit on contract lengths. Maybe something like a salary cap floor like you see in the NFL?

I would be interested to see how much value contracts are adjusted to inflation compared to the days when Mike Hampton got an 8 year, 161 million deal in 2000.

A-Rod's 10 year, 250 million right now adjusted for inflation would be yuge. Giambi got 7 years 120 mill from NY.

I think players still would prefer guaranteed years with high AAV versus opt-out contracts that last a few years with higher AAV in short term.
