Michah Bowie, a 1993 draft pick of the Braves who made his MLB debut with Atlanta in 1999, is in a battle for his life without the help of the MLBPA. Bowie, who was in the trade for Terry Mullholland, went on to pitch for the Cubs, A's and Rockies, was in the majors for parts of six seasons but came up 20 days short of the four full seasons on an active roster to qualify for lifetime medical benefits.
A complication from back surgery has cost him all about about 10 percent usage of his lungs and is in a hospice-care level facility despite being only 44 years old. Twice appeals to the MLBPA for benefits were rejected, but new news is that a group called the Friends of the Association for the Professional Baseball Players of America is helping him financially.
