Take it for what it is, like a mock draft. Doubt that anybody from MLBTR is that connected. They just post rumors or transactions from other sources, and include speculation and discussion. Notice how after Dierkes lists an "expected destination" there are sometimes 7 or 8 other possible teams. The site just needs hits, because nothing exciting is going to happen until at least the GM meetings.

This is really the downside of the internet communication for hot stove league. Remember what it was like after '92. All we heard was that it was all but assured that Bonds was going to be signed. ESPN even tried to play it up during the expansion draft when he and JS were on camera at the same time. Totally unexpectedly, JS swept in and signed Maddux. Read about in USA Today.

You could say that every year with our payroll.

Halladay is intriguing if we could see him pitch. Scouts don't seem to agree he will go from throwing 220 IP at 2.30 ERA, to having a injury plagued year, to done. If so, I haven't seen any reports as such. He was sick and had surgery last year.

Its also not like we will be signing anyone sight unseen.

    What about bullpen, bench pieces?

I've said many times we dont need to do much.

Only thing i wouldnt mind is a 1-yr deal for a veteran starter, thats about it.

Yeah, Halladay is done, maybe he was hurt but he hasnt been the same for a little while in the last couple years.

Josh Johnson is the only one whose intriguing on a 1-year deal.

Should've clarified what I meant. My fault.

I meant this is not the year to go for the big name free agents. If the Braves go for someone big, i.e. David Price, it will be via trade. I do think a bullpen and bench piece free agent will be signed by the Braves. As an example, I could see Benoit signed for the bullpen.

He had a 4.4 ERA, with 156 IP in 2012, not really.

Agree with that, after Ellsbury, Mac, Choo, Cano, the FA's are really a big dropoff.

Benoit would be a good signing depending on the cost, or someone like Mujica.

Not a very Doc like line for sure, but i doubt he goes off a cliff like that. Bring him in, I bet Rog could tell you real quick if he has it back or not. 156 ip tells me injuries maybe?

It must be nice to have money. Do the Nats really need another frontline starter???

The Nationals are looking for a front-line starter and Max Scherzer makes for a nice fit, according to FoxSports' Ken Rosenthal.

We don't always print straight conjecture, but when we do, we prefer Ken Rosenthal. The reporter who has made a habit over the years of being oddly prescient in his opinions notes that Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo drafted Scherzer when he ran the Diamondbacks' scouting department, Washington has the power-armed prospects Detroit would seek in a Scherzer swap, and the Nationals get along famously with Scherzer rep Scott Boras. Detroit is "listening, not shopping" on Scherzer at the moment. Scherzer is entering his final season of arbitration and MLBTradeRumors.com predicts he will earn $13.6 million through that process. Rosenthal adds that Rays' southpaw David Price might be an option for Washington, as well.

Given what most people seem to think the going price for David Price should be, I'd be happy to see the Gnats break the bank to get him. Sure it would help them in the near term, but I'm a fan who takes a long view.

Btw BA just came out with their list of the Gnats top 10 prospects:

    1. Giolito RHP
    2. Cole RHP
    3. Goodwin OF
    4. Skole 1B/3B
    5. Ray LHP
    6. Solis LHP
    7. Taylor OF
    8. Johansen RHP
    9. Karns RHP
    10. Souza OF

Looking at this ranking, it doesn't seem like they have the pieces to acquire Price.

Rendon could be part of that kind of deal. Not saying it is likely. But if they are willing to include Rendon, then they can put together a competitive package. I think it is as crazy for them to contemplate it as it would be for us to put together a package that included Wood, Bethancourt and Peraza.

To me both Rendon and Wood are more valuable as Price. Not better. But more valuable when you consider salary and years of contractual control.

Phils signed Ruiz to a 3 yr 26 million dollar deal. Their average age now remains at 108 years old. Is it time to get a free agent/trades around mlb thread going?
