    Amash

To his credit he was the only Republican who showed any interest in eliciting information from Michael Cohen.

If and when the time comes for impeachment, the Dems would be well advised to work with him and any other independent minded Republicans out there.

There aren't many, but a couple others come to mind: Elise Stefanik and Will Hurd, both members of the House Intelligence Committee.

    Interview with Amash.

It seems to me that [the current debate over changing Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act in order to regulate social media companies’ moderation practices] is evidence of the breakdown in the relationship between libertarians and conservatives and kind of a tough time to be a libertarian-minded conservative.

    Justin Amash
I think it does play into a general shift within the Republican Party away from a fear of big government and more toward a sense of victimization that society is coming after them. And it might be corporations, it might be people who live in urban centers, [but] they’re coming after them to take away their freedoms and culture.

A lot of Trump Republicans have this mindset that they have to fight this all out war against the left. And if they have to use big government to do it, they’re perfectly fine with that.

I don't think this sense of victimization and grievance from the right is anything new. But good for Amash for noticing the paranoia.

On the distinction between patriotism and nationalism:

    Jane Coaston
So on that, could you talk more about other ways that you saw that shift coming before kind of June 2015 and the rise of Trump?

    Justin Amash
Before then, it was gradual. [Like] this concept of nationalism that I started to see pop up more and more at town halls or on social media, where I heard Republican speaking favorably of nationalism. And at first I thought it was just people mixing up their terminology. I was like, “No, you mean patriotism.” Like we should be patriotic, [have] love for our institutions, in our country and the ideals of liberty, justice, and equality — those are the ideals of patriotism.
But I started to hear [the word] nationalism more and more. And that’s a concept that really is about a love for your people simply by virtue of being your people, not related to any principles you hold or what your country stands for, what ideals you’re striving for. It’s about [how] Americans are just inherently better, or [how] particular Americans in some cases might be viewed as inherently better. And that’s a very dangerous ideology, and it is certainly not what this country was founded on.

"I think I have a better understanding of America as a whole than a lot of my colleagues here who think America is just right-wing people and left-wing people."

We'll see if he is right.

    Am genuinely curious why.

All he has done is uphold his principles to the constitution and limited government.

If you're mad at him that he isn't blindly supporting Trump, then you are proving his point

He'll be a lonely guy, but I certainly respect his decision. Although I likely don't agree with Amash on many things, he strikes me as a guy who never does anything out of convenience.

I understand and admire his thoughts and passions but any votes he can take away from the GOP hurt the GOP and help the left. People hate the two party system but people are throwing away their votes when they are used on any candidate that doesn’t have a chance to win. Amash should be smart enough to realize this.

Let’s say Freddie Freeman has 900,000 votes to start the all star game and Anthony rizzo has 900,004 votes. You’re family of five goes to vote and even though you’re a braves fan you think peter Alonso deserves it so you all vote for him but he only ends up with 100,000 total votes, you wasted your votes. Instead of voting for someone (freeman) you may not think deserved it but you still like the guy you wasted your votes on a guy who had no chance to win. So now when you watch the all star game, Rizzo goes 0-2 and makes two horrible errors and the AL wins. All because your family of five had to take a stand and waste their votes.

It’s still a two party system. People need to pick sides

Of all the people follow, Amash criticized Obama more than anyone, and did so in a thoughtful and objective way.

I dont follow his every move but I know he's not shy about calling out a wrong when he sees one

Republicans celebrating his departure are celebrating someone who lives by the principles of our founders.

    Not a great look.

The left has been lost for years no surprise they hate him
