Glenn Sparkman (yes, who???) is in their rotation right now, and their AAA rotation consists of great prospects like Eric Skoglund (6.51 ERA) and Foster Griffin (7.38 ERA). Jake Kalish may be their best Pitcher currently in Omaha.

Montgomery certainly isn't good, but he'll serve the same purpose Harang and others did when we were rebuilding - you run him out there and hope he gives you enough innings that he keeps you from rushing the prospects.
They could effectively accomplish the same thing by signing some replacement player that is still a free agent or just calling up some more of their triple A filler. Montgomery might be marginally better than one of those guys, but who the hell cares when you're 30 games under .500?

One of the beauties of being a terrible baseball team is that you aren't forced to do anything. You don't have to rush your prospects if you don't want to. You can just call up the next warm body and continue being terrible because, what's the difference?

Just go sign Boone Logan or AJ Ramos or Joaquin Benoit for the league minimum and get a future asset whenever you're gonna make a trade, however marginal he is.

You both are right—which is why I think Moore must believe in a real turnaround for Montgomery. He also started his career in KC, so there must be some residual love boosting that belief.

I guess if he has a career renaissance then they could use him as a trade asset in the next year or two, but I'm not sure they aren't better off just taking the prospect for Maldonado. What is the most you could possibly get for a 30 year old Mike Montgomery that you couldn't get for Maldonado?

This has to be the case, as delaying the clocks for prospects is probably the worst "idea" I've ever heard for spending assets to acquire a player. I mean...shockingly dumb.

KC has to be thinking there's a chance they can turn a swing man with 2.5 years of control into an effective SP with 1.5-2 years of control, and flip him for something even better than whatever prospect package Maldonado could have gotten them.

Who knows if they can pull it off (the Cubs haven't exactly been a pitcher development factory), but it's far more logical than the other "idea" presented.

Dayton Moore has made some dreadful miscalculations the past 2-3 years in the hopes that he could keep the Royals in contention. Now its gonna be a pretty long and painful road back for them.
Montgomery has a strong track record as a reliever/spot starter, but apparently they want to put him back in the rotation full time. They're obviously hoping they can fix him and make him a valuable piece again. Maldano wasn't getting them anyone of relevance anyways and the Cubbies also probably needed to shed a 40 man spot.

Dayton Moore has made plenty of questionable moves, but it's odd to put him on blast for this one.

Wilson is up, Fried to the 10-day IL. It doesn't sound too serious and this will probably be a great way to limit the innings a bit.

Bullpen will be shorthanded tonight too as Jackson and Sobotka won't be available after pitching three of the last four days. Plus we recently lost Webb to the IL of course. So now the kid Ynoa may see action tonight.

Allard pitched last night so he's a possible call up for a spot start.

It would be cool to see if his stuff has really ticked up as some recent reports have suggested.

That's a fine theory, except Colon is retired.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

I don't think Montgomery's much other than a placeholder either, but it's not like anybody was going to give them a prospect with any realistic chance of turning into anything for Maldonado - can only guess that they're hoping Montgomery can be at least as good as most of the trash they have at the upper levels for a bit.
