Anyhow Newk is making a spot start until Keuchel comes up. Sometimes a spot start reveals something. Most of the time the guy making it goes back to the pen or the minors. I'll throw out an observation. Pitching is psychologically burdensome. More so for some than others. It appears to me that some of the weight Newk was feeling has been lifted. Not sure if it is related to going to the pen, working something out mechanically or seeing a shrink. But the guy seems a lot more relaxed and comfortable and confident than he did at the start of the season.

This makes sense. The only contention that was made regarding the move is we essentially lost one of our best arms in the pen for 10 days to accommodate the spot start. Obviously it hasn’t mattered since we have won, but we aren’t exactly teeming with quality depth in the pen.

Personally, I would rather have given that spot start to Wright. At least we have an FO/manager that actually seem to know best, so I trust the decision that they made was the correct one.

this i disagree with. Wright hasn't looked right at all in the minors and was already shredded by Philly. if he looked even just "good" for a couple of starts down there that'd be fine. but he's been so bad.

I agree. I think making a start can sike a guy out. You have time to over think things. The pen you just sit until they ask you to make pitch then you make pitch. It is less mentally taxing imo. But with a Newk I still wonder if they adjusted something in his mechanics that has him dealing right now.

It allowed the team to bring Minter up to take up Newk's sport. Minty Hippo looked pretty good in the two appearances against the Pirates.

Padres apparently willing to listen on all of their position players outside of Hosmer, Machado, and Tatis....

Anyone we’d want? I know that’s not nearly our biggest need

The Pads have, like, half a dozen MLB caliber OF's. Would be a good play for next year.

Renfroe/markakis would be one hell of a platoon. Probably too expensive for a platoon though

Well it'd only be a platoon for a year... He'd be our full time guy next year. I'm not as down on Renfroe as I used to be... still doesn't walk enough but his power has really come into its own and he's actually a positive defender now. Also seems like a real hard worker. I don't know if I'd rather have him or Frazier... don't love Frazier's defense or attitude but is likely a more well rounded hitter. I really hope we inquired about Gallo at least this past off season... he'd look really good in our OF about now but that chance is probably gone now. Dude has turned into a very good OF defender and his 20% walk rate compensates for the 36% K rate.... BABIP is high but an ISO of .376 with a wRC+ of 170 and a WAR of 3.3 and still only 25 is impressive.

I'm guessing we will need to have someone ready as a stopgap as the waiting on Waters and Pache is likely to continue. Renfroe, Reyes, or maybe even Margot (who would come very cheap, but may be a AAAA guy) could serve in that role.

Renfroe would be nice, but I imagine SD places a large price on him being that he still has 4 years of control and is having a very nice season. Myers is also decent, but he has too much money and too many years still owed for me be interested.

Blackmon sets a record for most hits in a 4 game series. Padres and Rockies also set record for most combined runs in a 4 game series.

Not position players but Yates would be a huge pick up!
