Eh, one atrocious game at LA in the middle of the year.

MadBum is back and will only get better as he has a long sustained run of health.

Home is where the heart is.

If his new home was in Atlanta he'd be pitching like he played for the other team.

    Bet scoreboard...
    Gausman (enscheff): 1.2 fWAR
    Bumgarner (me): 2.8 - 0.2 = 2.6 fWAR

Gasman has been relegated to the Reds bullpen now and has given up 5 runs in 4 innings. That bet is over.

what are the chances someone like Pence would get to Atlanta on outright waivers? i'm sure DeShields would be claimed before he made it to Atlanta, but a little speed and defense off the bench would be nice too.

Philly wouldn't let that happen, I'm pretty sure anyway

I can't believe people STILL think Bumgarner is an ace. It's appalling.

Not sure anyone thinks he is an ace anymore. Not seriously. But he was better than some of the options we have been throwing. That said he wasn’t getting traded this season anyway so all moot. We can just laugh at both the giants and the Mutts in October for thinking they had a shot after beating up on crappy teams.

Honestly I can forgive the Mets. They have the rotation to do damage in the playoffs. So them getting the second wild card was worth a shot. The Giants are damned fools.

Maybe with it being bochy's last year, they wanted to at least give him a chance.

They may have calculated that they would rather go the QO route with Smith and Bumgarner. They traded some players at the deadline.

    Hmm. QO could be risky.

They get a pick or they get a good player on a one-year deal, who they can then trade away mid-season. Seems low risk to me.

Yeah. But 36 million to two aging PITCHERS in a non competitive year seems risky no matter how you spin it.

IMO, there’s no such thing as a risky 1 yr deal, especially if you’re non competitive. It’s not as if there is really an opportunity cost with that money your spending.

Agreed on one year deals. But the comparison was cashing out those values at the trade deadline or waiting for a QO. Pitching is risky. Aging pitching is riskier. Taking the prospect now seemed like a wiser move imo. Sure you can get a good player on a one year deal. But a non competitive team doesn’t need a good player on a one year deal. Not when they could have already traded them. I doubt they are more valuable next trade deadline.

Whichever team is smart enough to give him a payday for 6ish years will be setting themselves up for a half decade of sheer dominance.
