I think locking Acuna up ought to give the Braves a lot more confidence in making other moves.

The Braves apparently know they will control Acuna through his age 31 season at a maximum of 17m in any given year? Is that right? Wow, that really ought to open up some cash in short and long term.

Whether it should go to Kimbrel simply depends, but I think this should make something like Kimbrel more likely.

Ronald Acuna will still get paid $560,000 this year, so extension is actually a seven-year deal worth $99.944 million. It includes two $17 million club options and a $10 buyout, . Fabulous move by the Atlanta #Braves locking him up through 2030 at a maximum cost of $124 million.
The 8/100 portion is exactly as expected. I have detailed that contract almost exactly a few times now.

The extra 2 option years is mind bogglingly stupid from Acuna's agent. I have no idea why he agreed to it, but the Braves now control Acuna throughout the entirety of his 20s.

Unless there is some opt-out clause that hasn't been reported yet, this is an extremely good extension for the Braves.

I mean, Acuna is still getting paid. He gave up 100+ million in signing this, but it also protects him in case of injury or if he craters. It's still life changing money, even if isn't Trout money.

The $10 buyout is added into the $100M guarantee, and is used to spread cash out farther.

This is how contracts with options are typically reported.

This just locks him up through 2028, right? Not 2030.
"Acuna is getting lucky, just like CJ did when he batted .321 and won a batting title. He is unlikely to get lucky at the MLB level over an extended period of time. He will settle in around .300-.320 just like everyone else, and when he does, he won't be within shouting distance of the 1.000 OPS he is posting in AAA...more like low .700s in 2018." -Enscheff 8/25/17

It also locks him up through his age 30 season, not age 31 as I've seen some places.

Do people think the 2019 salary figure is an obstacle to bringing in Kimbrell? I wouldn't think that was the sticking point.

The questions as they relate to signing Kimbrel are how long it makes sense to guarantee an aging RP and whether his acquisition is worth giving up a 2nd round pick. None of it has anything to do with how much we'll pay Acuna in the future.

In fact, this deal means we'll likely pay Acuna more than he would have made in 2020-2022, which are the years you'd be paying Kimbrel.
