Someone like Dansby who got a big signing bonus and comes from probably a decently well off family will probably bet on himself. He can make that gamble. Acuna and Ozzie can’t. This is their chance to make life changing money and if God forbid they have a injury that ruins their career...they are taken care of. That security is priceless when you have ZERO to fall back on.

I've often said I'd never be a billionaire, because I'd quit long before I got anywhere near that amount of money.

But the thing about these deals that is dumb is that 15 million dollars can be permanently life changing.

These guys could have changed their families lives forever without giving away as much control for so little.

One could say the Braves would not have done any extension but this, but I don't believe it. I have to believe they'd have caved to a reasonable deal at some point.

But this is a good thing for Braves fans, no doubt.

Having 2 corner stone young superstars like Acuna and Albies will only attract better players to wanna come play here knowing these guys are locked up for a long time.

What this probably does is ensure Acuna and Albies a strong chance of going down as the most popular players in Braves history. They will now be in Atlanta for at least a solid decade, and they'll be paid peanuts. If they even come close to reaching their potential, having them on the roster with that much financial flexibility will lead to all kinds of good things.
"Acuna is getting lucky, just like CJ did when he batted .321 and won a batting title. He is unlikely to get lucky at the MLB level over an extended period of time. He will settle in around .300-.320 just like everyone else, and when he does, he won't be within shouting distance of the 1.000 OPS he is posting in AAA...more like low .700s in 2018." -Enscheff 8/25/17

I think everyone gets it just fine.

They did not have to sign away their entire careers at a 50% discount to get life changing money.

These deals have a bit of a predatory stench to them, if I'm being completely honest.

The Braves may have the 2 most valuable assets in the game right now.

They definitely show the importance of a good agent.

Never walk into a police questioning without a good lawyer, and never walk into a contract negotiation without a good agent.

When you consider how Upton’s modest albatross of a contract ended our previous window of contention, its easier to comprehend the reverse significance of these contracts.

i think complaining about greedy athletes is dumb.
if ozzie and ronald are happy with these deals, and happy to be playing together for the foreseeable future and that's what's important to them, more power to them.

Again I wouldn't blame their agents yet. Agents work for their clients not the other way around (despite what Boras may think). Acuna and Albies may just want to play for the Braves and the money wasn't their top priority.

No matter what, the dollar figure attached to those option years is absolutely insane. I don't care what your client tells you, a good agent should be able to get considerably more than that on 2 options tacked onto the 2 FA years.

The new Braves regime walked into a dream situation with Acuna/Albies: two phenoms that got low amateur bonuses, came up/want to stay together, got there fast & both were repped by small agencies. Heavy rumors the agents were nervous they would lose the kids before they got paid.

so, those were the "rumors" kiley was talking about with the acuña deal. hmm

I think it's more accurate to say the Braves have taken advantage of 2 excellent players with backgrounds of extreme poverty.

This is the predatory stench I'm talking about.

These agents cashed in before their star clients took off, and the Braves took full advantage.

I just hope this doesn't turn into some sort of grievance in the future. Is the MLBPA going to allow shady agents to shortchange 21 year old kids who don't know anything about anything?

Mlb will find a way to declare them free agents next year

    that's an interesting take too.

As to the options years being ridiculous. Again I think Acuna and Albies are a tuned to the realities of the Atlanta market, and the reality that the Braves will never have a top 10 payroll. I think they like winning and want to make sure the Braves can afford to keep that happening. It's possible these are some of the discussions that happened during negotiations.
