Considering I said something extremely ignorant along the lines of "Albies probably doesn't speak English well enough to understand what he signed", I can't really get to frenzied over this kind of comment.

Folks are trying to articulate the idea that Albies was taken advantage of a bit on his deal, and the way they state as much often comes out in ignorant ways that they would probably revise if given the chance.

Is it really that difficult to say: $35 million potentially means something different and more substantial to a 22-year-old from Curaçao whose family lost their father at age-40—especially relative to someone like, say, Alex Bregman, whose parents are both attorneys in the US? Not sure how that’s so much harder than fumbling into: this brown kid doesn’t understand 85>35. Like, for real: nuance can be hard; but, in this case, it’s not that hard.

unfortunately nuance is extremely tough for some people.

    Which was silly as hell.

It might be ignorant of his situation but I don’t think its racism.

Honestly though, what IS the difference between 85 million and 35 million?

I'm not sure I know. I'd be happy to find out, but not sure it would matter much.

Still, he did not make the right call (Albies).

The way he said it, it is racist. But I don’t think it was intentional. I think he was basically saying as he is poor, his family was poor, they lost the primary breadwinner at 40 so 35 million was so much that he didn’t care what was after that

This is what pisses me off. Talking heads keep bringing this up about how bad of a deal it was and is going to breed resentment eventually. Just let it go and let the kid be happy

There is truth to this. Look at lottery winners. Always take the lump sum because the money is so life altering. But the gradual payout is the better way because you get the max amount you can and you learn how to handle the money before you blow through it all. Most people who don’t have money that get a lump sum of money don’t end up with much money in the end because they are not life trained in how to handle that money. So in reality for people with little money, 35 million is not much different than 85 million.

This. If I ever won the lottery, I would do this as well even though my ex is a CPA and we are on great terms. You get most of it and I at my age does not need all that money and in a will my kids will be taken care of for life. The only issue is the other family members and that is when it gets hairy. They would love you to get a lump sum and take care of them. I have an issue with that.

I can do Goldfly things and that is my bucket list.

You should put that theory to the test. Go around being an open racist and see how that goes for you.

racism isn't walking around in a white cloak (anymore). it's become less veiled recently, but is still more veiled than *that.* if the only thing you'd consider racist is someone saying "i hate black people," you're missing basically all of the current racism.
